Asthma inhaler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The most widely used variety are pressurised aerosols metered dose inhalers (MDI) using a carrier substance to suspend the drug, pressurise the system and carry the drug in particles or droplets of a suitable size to reach the small airways in the lungs.
Until recently, MDI inhalers were filled with CFC as propellant and solvent for the medication.
In one variety of beclomethasone inhaler, the combination of increased absorption and better particle size has resulted in an increase of potency of 180%, however for the salbutamol inhalers the effectiveness and dose required remain unchanged.

Inhaler - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-07)
The co-ordination between activating the inhaler and breathing in is critical for effective delivery of the drug into the lungs.
This can be difficult in younger asthma sufferers or elderly people with arthritis of their hands, or those with a poor ability to hold their breath for 10 seconds after using an inhaler (again generally the elderly).
Alternatively a device called an Asthma spacer may be used which is an enclosed plastic cylinder that mixes the medication with air in a simple tube, making it easier for patients to receive a full dose of the drug (see image on right).

Asthma inhalers: How they work - MayoClinic.com
Using an inhaler is just one part of your asthma treatment plan, which may also include checking your lung function with a peak flow meter, eliminating asthma triggers and exercising.
Asthma inhalers are used to deliver a variety of asthma medications — some that assist with long-term control and others that provide quick relief of symptoms.
Nebulizers are designed for those who can't use an inhaler, such as infants, young children and those who are seriously ill. The device works by converting medication into a mist and delivering it through a mask that you wear over your nose and mouth.

Inhaler abusers were also three times more likely to engage in binge drinking and 10 times more likely to use other drugs, Dr. Boyd and colleagues wrote in the upcoming November issue of Addictive Behaviors.
The easy access to these prescription inhalers has created an image for children and their families that the devices are innocuous, said the investigators.
Why inhaler abuse spikes during this time period is unclear, though Dr. Boyd said the eighth and ninth grades are often a time when students are curious about experimenting with drugs.
