Minefields have been located in all provinces of Mozambique, but the most heavily mined regions are found along the border with Zimbabwe in the west of Manica province, in the center of the country in Zambezia and Tete provinces, and in the south in Maputo and Inhambane provinces.
The major area of flooding in Gaza and Maputo provinces fell in the Accelerated Demining Program’s (ADP) core area of operation, while the flooding in the Save River (between Inhambane and Sofala/Manica) is in the Norwegian People’s Aid (NPA) and Handicap International (HI) working area.
Preliminary analysis of a 1997 survey in Inhambane and Maputo provinces by researchers from Dalhousie University, Canada, suggests that only 20.7 per cent of amputees were using a prosthesis without difficulty, while 36.4 per cent of respondents had not received any rehabilitation treatment at all.

The districts with the worst rainfall performance were: Xai-Xai (24% of average), Mandlakazi (27%) in Gaza province, and Zavala (26%), Inhambane (29%), Inharrime (30%) and Maxixe (30%) in Inhambane Province.
Rainfall during the second agricultural season was very poor in the drought-affected south and less than half the average level in Maputo Province and the coastal areas of Gaza and Inhambane.
In Inhambane province, current prices are slightly above average in Maxixe (8%) and Massinga (15%) while in Gaza province, prices in Xai-Xai markets are 14% below average.

Maputo- Members of the governments of the southern Mozambican provinces of Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane are to meet in Vilankulo, in Inhambane, on 16 May to draw the attention of their development partners to the "Pafuri Corridor" project, and the need to raise funds for it.
The project is to build a new road from Inhambane province, across Gaza, and into South Africa's Northern Province at Pafuri.
Chissano noted that the road in question would run parallel to the pipeline being built by the South African petro-chemical company, Sasol, linking the Panda and Temane natural gas fields in Inhambane, to the SASOL factories in the town of Secunda.

 CARE Expands Relief Efforts for Flood Survivors in Mozambique
Expanding on its current relief activities in Inhambane Province, CARE now is distributing newly arrived supplies -- such as large-capacity water purifiers, blankets and small, collapsible containers for transporting water -- to people throughout the flood-ravaged province of Gaza in southern Mozambique.
CARE is focusing its relief efforts in Govuro district and Nova Mambone in the south-central province of Inhambane along the Save River while expanding its relief and recovery efforts to include severely affected people in the province of Gaza.
Meanwhile, with the recent reprieve from rain, the focus in the south-central province of Inhambane has shifted from search and rescue missions to the delivery of urgently needed food and plastic sheeting.

Maputo - Members of the governments of the southern Mozambican provinces of Maputo, Gaza, and Inhambane are to meet in Vilankulo, in Inhambane, on 16 May to draw the attention of their development partners to the "Pafuri Corridor" project, and the need to raise funds for it.

In Gaza Province, the number had increased considerably; in Tete Province it had increased moderately, and in Maputo and Inhambane it had increased slightly.
The assessment, which covered six drought-affected provinces (Maputo, Gaza, Inhambane, Sofala, Manica, Tete) found that 659,000 people - or 22 percent of the population in the affected districts - "require immediate and continuous food assistance until the next main harvest," which will begin in January in the southern region and February/March in the central region.
Reports from the troubled southern provinces indicated crops were in "good condition" due to sufficient rainfall lately.

 Inhambane Province - Jangamo District
Jangamo is a small and densely populated district close to Inhambane city, the provincial capital.  Being close to urban and peri-urban areas, and their markets and having access to a good road network, the district has relatively dynamic commercial and income earning opportunities.
The district relies mainly on road transport and is situated on an important axis linking the district by all-weather roads to Maputo, to the provincial capital of Inhambane and the important commercial town of Maxixe.
