Inharmonicity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
In music, inharmonicity is the degree to which the frequencies of the overtones of a fundamental differ from whole number multiples of the fundamental's frequency.
These inharmonic overtones are often distinguished from harmonic overtones, all whole number multiples, by calling them partials, though partial may also be used to refer to both.
Strings are more inharmonic the shorter and thicker they are, which becomes an important consideration for piano tuners, especially in the thick strings of the bass register; see Piano acoustics.

Similarly the specific inharmonic timbre of Thai metallophones would produce the seven-tone near-equal temperament they do indeed employ.
The five-note sometimes near-equal tempered slendro scale provides the most consonance in the combination of the inharmonic spectra of Balinese metallophones with harmonic instruments such as the stringed rebab.
The timbre of a sound is also greatly affected by the following factors: attack or interonset interval, decay, sustain, release and transients.

Real strings are also inharmonic because they are not infinitely thin or flexible, and so do not bend perfectly easily at the bridge and the nut.
The inharmonicity disappears when the strings are bowed, but is more noticeable when they are plucked or struck.
Thus the operating mode of a bowed string playing a steady* note is a compromise among the tunings of all of the (slightly inharmonic) string resonances.

At the top end of the piano keyboard, the hammer noise is lower-pitched than are the strings and is actually louder--it is the piano-tuner's nightmare to hear the evanescent high-pitched tones through all that distracting noise.
Of course, the different kinds of tubular chimes and metal and wooden bars in the other percussive instruments have assorted inharmonic pitches that are not in the 12-tone scale either.
This causes an unexpected surprising blend with the piano, which is shown to be primarily a percussion instrument, not the singing stringed instrument that the music critics of piano recitals and the teachers of Romantic period pieces keep arguing that it is.

Inharmonic digitally-generated timbres and computer-produced and -controlled inharmonic series could not be heard prior to the mid-1970s.
Now that everyone can hear and experiment with such musical timbres and inharmonic series tunings, it has become starkly apparent that arguments for just intonation on inharmonic series tunings, it has become starkly apparent that arguments for just intonation on the basis of sensory consonance do *not* necessarily lead to sensory consonance.
John R. Pierce, Max Mathews, William Sethares, myself and many others have produced demonstation tapes showing this effect.) The point of all this is that my systematic demolition of the sensory consonance argument for just intonation is in fact necessary to create a firm foundation for the musical use of JI.

Acoustically, this is an important distinction because each ratio produces an inharmonic or inharmonic timbre - a property usable compositionally.
Once we are thinking along the lines of families of ratios producing the same set of sidebands, we may want to know how to calculate the right carrier frequency for a family member ratio that produces the same spectrum as the Normal Form ratio on a given fundamental-carrier, e.g.

A dual filter can be used this way but the ringing frequency of the two sections can easily be offset by an inharmonic interval.
In nature this kind of sound is produced by chimes and gongs which vibrate in many different modes when struck, and this association is the reason this sample has a more "metallic" sound.
This kind of sonic texture is frequently done with Balanced Modulators (another device that produces inharmonic partials) but because of the way that frequencies are summed and differenced in a balanced modulator they are essentially impossible to play chromatically in any musical scale.

Every sound can be decomposed in a sine spectrum representing the harmonic and inharmonic partials and a residual noise spectrum for the noise components.
The new residual noise generator of Cube 2 allows you to create evolving noise spectra in a way which was never possible before.

Recorded bell sounds are first analyzed by high-resolution frequency-zooming modal estimation technique where each partial is described typically by 2-3 submodes in order to include the warble characteristics due to envelope beating in the partials.
The bells are then modeled by inharmonic digital waveguides in order to achieve a computationally highly efficient yet parametrically controllable synthesis model.
Since basic digital waveguides are inherently harmonic models, special means are needed to approximate the strongly inharmonic bell sounds, paying particular attention to the accuracy of the lowest partials.

The actual wave import process only takes a second or two if your sample is reasonably short, so it's not too much bother to try out a few different configurations, but nonetheless, I'd prefer it if the synth did more of the work for you in finding an optimal setting.
By way of comparison, Vertigo lacks the aforementioned Cameleon 5000's clever use of noise to reproduce inharmonic elements of imported timbres, and is rather less versatile as a result.
The percussive elements on the attack phase of certain sounds (think the flute 'chiff' or the piano 'thunk') don't survive the resynthesis process, though in some cases a confluence of high-frequency harmonics can help mask their absence.
