INIA was (and still is) the largest of these entities, with regional research centers and substations throughout the country.
By conviction, INIA was resistant to change and had sufficient autonomy and administrative flexibility to enable it to avoid the more painful adjustments needed at the time.
While the specialist staff with advanced training continues to be concentrated in INIA and the faculties of agriculture, there are growing numbers of private firms engaged in technology search and adaptation, and downstream research for the farm sector.

Sixth, Inia are notoriously difficult to keep in captivity: A great deal of sexual aggression by males towards females has been observed in captivity, to the point that animals have had to be separated and some have died due to injuries and stress related to sexual aggression.

The initial INIA initiative (RFA AA-01-002, see http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/rfa-files/RFA-AA-01-002.html) created two consortia of highly integrated, multidisciplinary, collaborative research projects that are focussed on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying various aspects of neuroadaptation to alcohol.
The research objectives of this INIA consortium are to identify the molecular and cellular neuroadaptations of the brain reward circuitry within the amygdala and its associated neural connections.
Collaborative Responsibilities Scientific Advisory Panel: Each INIA consortium includes an external scientific advisory panel whose purpose is to meet annually with the consortium coordinator and the Steering Committee to assess progress and provide feedback to the INIA investigators and NIAAA on proposed goals for the next year of support.

Chronic exposure to alcohol results in neuroadaptive phenomena, including tolerance, sensitization, dependence, withdrawal, loss of control of drinking, and relapse that contribute to the development of excessive alcohol consumption.
The Consortium INIA (Integrative Neuroscience Initiative on Alcoholism) will be tasked to identify the molecular, cellular, and behavioral neuroadaptations that occur in the brain reward circuits associated with the extended amygdala and its connections.
It is hypothesized that genetic differences and/or neuroadaptations in this circuitry are responsible for the individual differences in vulnerability to the excessive consumption of alcohol.

"INIA is expected to create new resources for understanding alcoholism mechanisms, and to provide opportunities for collaboration between scientists in the alcohol field and prominent investigators from other research areas," said Samir Zakhari, Ph.D., Director, NIAAA Division of Basic Research.
INIA also will perform and develop capacity for computational neurobiology research on the functional organization and operation of the brain.
For 2002, NIAAA already has expanded INIA to encourage the use of anatomical (tracer) mapping, multi-unit electrophysiological recording techniques in behaving animals, other state-of-the-art methods to identify neural circuits and pathways involved in the alcohol response, and the use of neurocomputational and theoretical approaches to predict drinking-induced neuroadaptation.

This INIA consortium characterizes stress and alcohol effects on the nervous system at all levels, and in organisms ranging from mice to monkeys and humans.
We employ a wide range of technologies including genetic analysis and measurements of ion channel function, synaptic activity and activity of neurons within active circuits in vivo, as well as analysis of stress-related behaviors and alcohol intake.
The INIA has increased our understanding of the molecular, cellular and systems-based neuroadaptive changes that take place in the brain as a consequence of alcohol/stress interactions.
