The Autonomous Community of Catalonia (Catalan: Comunitat Autònoma de Catalunya; Spanish: Comunidad Autónoma de Cataluña; Aranese: Comunautat Autonoma de Catalonha), known throughout history simply as Catalonia, is today one of the 17 autonomous communities that constitute the Kingdom of Spain.
According to a study carried out in 2003 by the Generalitat de Catalunya [4], Catalan is used by 50.1% of the population in everyday situations.

At the regional elections held on November 16, 2003, at which Pujol retired, the combined parties of the left defeated the CiU for the first time and Pasqual Maragall i Mira became President of the Generalitat.
Maragall's Socialists, however, actually lost seats: the big winners were the Republican Left of Catalonia (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya or ERC), which favours full Catalan independence, and the Greens.

Iniciativa per Catalunya Verds (Initiative for Catalonia-Greens) was created in 1987 as a federation of parties, whose goal was to foster an alternative national left-leaning project.
There were initially three parties: PSUC (Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya, Unified Socialist Party of Catalonia), PCC (Partit dels Comunistes de Catalunya, Catalan Communist Party) and the Entesa Nacionalista d'Esquerra (Left-wing Nationalists Agreement).
Rafael Ribó was elected President of IC in the 1st Assembly and he stayed in office until the 6th Assembly.

In a February poll by Instituto Opina released by Cadena Ser, 77.2 per cent of respondents said there should be a televised debate between the top candidates.
Voter turnout was tabled at 77.21 per cent, an 8.5 per cent improvement from the 2000 general election.

In 1994, the Catalan Greens (‘Els Verds – Confederació Ecologista de Catalunya’) reached an electoral agreement with the former communist party in Catalonia (called ‘Partit Socialista Unificat de Catalunya – PSUC’, but renamed as ‘Iniciativa per Catalunya - IC’ when an identity crises crossed all the communist parties in Western Europe).

He has said that he now wants to keep all of the current ministers in their posts ‘indefinitely’, after reaffirming his confidence in them, and announced the grouping together of ministries into four macro areas.
In the past few days the ERC (Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya), one of Maragall’s partners in government, has warned the president that they may abandon the Executive if reform plans were to be carried out.
The decision communicated by President Maragall is in line with his willingness to ‘concentrate the actions of the government’ and of providing it with greater joint responsibility between the different ministries.
