Article on visiting Inisheer, the smallest of Ireland's Aran Islands
I was on Inisheer in 1975, back when there was the so-called "holy hour," the time each Sunday afternoon when pubs in Ireland used to shut their doors.
As the hour approached, I was hurried into the kitchen of my B&B. There, the proprietor's two sons handed me a can from the waist-high pile of beer cases they'd hauled out to tide them over until the pubs re-opened.
Inisheer seems less remote today than it was then.

The Session: Discussions - But is it traditional?
If a tune has entered the tradition and is played as much and respected as much as 'Inisheer' then it is traditional, similarly the compositions of Paddy Fahey (also living) are so respected and played that they are part of the tradition and therefore traditional.
Inisheer is a lovely Irish tune that we regularly play in our sessions but I definitely wouldn't play it in a Fleadh air competition.
As for "Inisheer", it strikes me as a very pretty tune but not as a very strong one: though I know it's written by a known composer, I suspect it's still a work in progress, as it were, and people may alter it in time to come, as it passes through the mangle of tradition.
