The actual laser diode is mounted at the rear end of the aluminum block and the single element plastic lens is all that is needed to provide a reasonably well focused beam.
If one surface of the diode is antireflection coated, then an external end mirror may be used and all types of dispersive elements inserted to reduce the laser bandwidth.
Diodes made up from layers of different semiconductors, known as heterostructures, can overcome these natural limits by confining the light and the charge carriers to a defined region of the diode.

Laser diodes differ from conventional lasers, such as the helium-neon (He-Ne), ruby, and gas types, in several ways.
Some diodes are comprised of metal electrodes in a chamber evacuated or filled with a pure elemental gas at low pressure.
Diodes of this type, with the application of a voltage at the correct level and the polarity, generate analog signals at microwave radio frequencies.

 Laser Diode Structures
We have designed a vertical cavity laser that is actually a ring laser (rather than a conventional Fabry-Perot laser), [8] which allows for coupling to adjacent devices as well as surface emission.
This allows a small part of the beam from one laser to be injected into an adjacent laser, for injection locking.
Laser diode arrays can be either coherent (all elements in phase, for applications in which beam quality is an issue) or incoherent (to get huge amounts of power out of a laser without blasting the facets off).

The injection laser diode is configured to have an external cavity: everything between it and the mirror.
Because the laser is being run near its threshold condition, its longitudinal modes are having to compete for the available energy.
They also speculate on the possibility of integrating both the laser and external cavity on a single chip, using an optically addressed spatial light modulator to allow the output of a laser network to be input to another, and the possibility of manipulating a hundred laser modes in a single laser.

What is laser diode? - a definition from Whatis.com
A laser diode, also known as an injection laser or diode laser, is a semiconductor device that produces coherent radiation (in which the waves are all at the same frequency and phase) in the visible or infrared (IR) spectrum when current passes through it.
Laser diodes are used in optical fiber systems, compact disc (CD) players, laser printers, remote-control devices, and intrusion detection systems.
Wide-angle beam: A laser diode produces a "cone" rather than a "pencil" of visible light or IR, although this "cone" can be collimated using convex lenses.

The Diode Laser—the First Thirty Days Forty Years Ago
Of course, the basic quantum mechanics behind the radiative recombination and laser operation of chromium ions in ruby and the earlier demonstration of the microwave amplification by the emission of radiation—i.e., the MASER—using ammonia molecules, were fundamentally different from that occurring in a direct-bandgap semiconductor.
The first verification of laser operation was made through the observation of the near and far-field interference patterns using an infrared up converting “snooper scope” which was being used in Hall’s lab to study the emission from such infrared light emitters.
Sometime after the successful operation of the first semiconductor lasers at the GE Schenectady Lab, Hall’s boss, Roy Apker, called Holonyak at Syracuse to tell him that Hall’s group was running a diode laser and suggested that he should stop trying to cleave facets.

 Diode laser update news
Modern diodes aim for low dynamic resistance; from scanning the web, I expect a cutoff frequency of somewhere between 1kHz and 10kHz.
I think this is probably because varying the injection current affects both the laser intensity and frequency, and our frequency reference (sat abs) does not properly discriminate between the two.
Remaining problems: the dither signal is ac-coupled to the lockin board, and to the current injection, but both have different equilibrium potentials.
