She served as a cabinet minister in the government of New Democratic Premier Gary Doer, and was a member of the Legislative Assembly of Manitoba from 1990 until her retirement in 2003.
She has participated in a number of national forums for the New Democratic Party, and is generally regarded as being on the left wing of the party.
On January 17, 2001, her portfolio was renamed the Ministry of Labour and Immigration, and she was relieved of responsibility for the MPICA and the Civil Service.

Manitoba supports for those on social assistance are often lower than other provinces. But, it is not simply a matter of increasing support through Social Assistance, but also of changing the program to treat people with dignity, and to provide help instead of barriers to learning, to earning income and to moving off social assistance.

A 72-year-old Winnipeg woman was killed yesterday afternoon after the car she was riding in was T-boned at a Tyndall Park intersection.
An accident witness said she was turning in her van from Inkster Boulevard to the southbound lanes of Keewatin Street about 1 p.m., when she noticed a white Chrysler Intrepid travelling north on Keewatin toward the intersection.
While Lori and other drivers in the turning lane slammed on their brakes, she said a Dodge 4x4 truck travelling west on Inkster didn't see the oncoming car and the two vehicles collided in the middle of the crossing.
