Inktomi, commonly referred to as "slurp" in the industry, is different from Google-Bot in many ways, however one of the biggest is unlike google, having your main site indexed does not mean that your whole site will be indexed.
Inktomi is known to ban sites for violations such as text to small to read, or invisible text or graphics, keyword stuffing in either the meta fields or html body, or submitting multiple pages of the same content.
Inktomi also employs a human editorial staff which randomly reviews sites for content and other violations which may not be picked up automatically.

TheStreet.com: Delving Into the Fuzzy Math at Inktomi
Inktomi disclosed in a quarterly filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission that it is changing the accounting treatment for its investment in Saratoga, Calif.-based AirFlash, a privately held seller of software for wireless technologies.
Inktomi owns about 29.4% of AirFlash, which once was trying to position itself as a provider of mobile commerce (or m-commerce) services.
For its part, Inktomi contends that its new accounting approach is more conservative than the alternative of waiting until the AirFlash investment were to be impaired and writing it down in one fell swoop.

This Job Adds Up   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Inktomi Corp., a Silicon Valley highflier known for its search-engine technology and for its network-caching software, recently did what many Net companies only dream about: It put the P in "P&L." Sure, net income for its second quarter wasn't huge -- a penny a share.
But the fact that Inktomi is growing so fast (revenue for that quarter topped $47 million, up from $15 million during the same quarter the previous year) and is also making money helps to explain its valuation of nearly $16 billion.
At Inktomi, the finance department is called "business services." I didn't want my people to be thought of as internal police whose job is to stop all of the "criminals" from spending the company's money.

Yahoo To Buy Inktomi   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Inktomi's crawler-based technology is likely to be a key in both helping Yahoo to attract those searchers and, importantly, help the company earn more off its search results pages.
However, another key factor was probably that Inktomi has the longest track record with paid inclusion of any of the crawlers Yahoo could have considered, having run such a program successfully since Fall 2000.
One notes that Inktomi isn't going to find a buyer "in this market," while not-quoted other analysts are summarized as agreeing with this view and another says that if Inktomi is sold, "their technology is worth millions of dollars, not tens of millions of dollars." Well, that's true.

 Inktomi's Free Add URL Penalty
Inktomi calls the system above its "main" crawler, but I think "link crawler" is a better name to distinguish it from Inktomi's other crawler components.
In addition to the link crawler, Inktomi also has what we can call its "Add URL crawler." Anyone who uses the free Add URL page of a major Inktomi partner, such as HotBot's, is sending their page (in most cases) to Inktomi's Add URL crawler.
Inktomi advised that the only negative to using free Add URL was that pages submitted through it were not guaranteed to appear in its index.

Yet Inktomi's search engine thinks this is the sixth most relevant page for a search on "animal rights." That is simply pathetic and shows the advantage of Google's scheme of ranking pages in part based on the extent of inbound links.
