Manifold (automotive engineering) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In automotive engineering, an intake manifold or inlet manifold is a part of an engine that supplies the fuel/air mixture to the cylinders.
The intake manifold is usually made of aluminium and located between the carburetor and the cylinder head.
Exhaust manifolds are generally and traditionally simple cast iron units which collect engine exhaust and deliver it to the exhaust pipe.

In physics, differentiable manifolds serve as the phase space in classical mechanics and four-dimensional pseudo-Riemannian manifolds are used to model spacetime in general relativity.
Manifolds need not be connected (all in "one piece"); thus a pair of separate circles is also a topological manifold.
A finite cylinder is a manifold with boundary.

If fuel is to be introduced before the manifold (ie not direct or port injection) then care must be taken to avoid the separation of fuel from the air stream that can occur if the flow velocity is too slow, due to too great a cross-sectional area.
One holds that a plenum- runner manifold combines the effects of a quarter-wave organ pipe and a Helmholtz resonator and that each can operate either independently or in conjunction as a "system." The other contemplates "wave motion" within the manifold, varying as a function of rpm, piston displacement and a host of related variables.
The runner length is defined from the inlet valve to the plenum.

Thermal Inlet Gasket - Ferriday Engineering
In theory, because of the cooler and denser inlet charge, a small and immediate power increase should be evident (if you can run a little more ignition timing before pre-ignition occurs then power should rise), but their main strength will be in helping to keep temperatures under control during and after prolonged engine use.
Engines with plastic inlet manifolds are not affected in the same way, though most modified engines discard these in favour of cast alloy.
Engines with a "V" configuration generally have an inlet manifold design that does not allow this type of gasket, but the same theory can be applied to plenum chambers and carburettor base plates etc. Prototypes can be created quickly in a variety of thicknesses - please call Mike Tanski on 01785 621710 for more details.
