A History of Inner Asia (Svat Soucek) - book review
A History of Inner Asia wouldn't be a bad choice for a traveller wanting to learn something about the region, but it is really aimed more at students or scholars after a framework for deeper delving into its history: it is a useful reference as well as an accessible introduction.
"Inner Asia" is a scholarly neologism, used by Soucek to refer to Mongolia and traditional "Central Asia" — the five ex-Soviet states of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekhstan, Tajikstan, and Kyrgyzstan, the Chinese autonomous region of Sinkiang, and portions of Iran, Afghanistan, and Russia.
The Kazakh nomads were conquered in the century up to 1850 and the khanates gradually lost their independence, with the final blows coming in the European scramble for colonies towards the end of the 19th century; their administration as governorates-general was not unlike colonial regimes elsewhere.

Inner Asia and Inner Asian Studies
Inner Asia, or the interior of the Eurasian landmass, comprises in historical terms the civilizations of Central Asia, Mongolia, and Tibet, together with neighboring areas and peoples that in certain periods formed cultural, political, or ethnolinguistic unities with these regions.
Areas pertinent to the study of Inner Asia for ethnolinguistic and historical reasons include the Tatar, Bashkir, and Kalmyk Republics in Russia and the Manchu homeland in northeast China.
Thus, our term "Inner Asia" corresponds to Russian "Sredniaia i Tsentral'naia Aziia" (however, under the influence of Western languages since 1991, Russian "Tsentral'niaia Aziia" is now sometimes used to mean "Central Asia" or "Inner Asia" in general).

ZNet |Japan | Where is East Asia?
Similarly Inner Asia (Mongolia, Inner Mongolia, Manchuria, Xinjiang and Tibet) is generally conceptualized as the "frontier" of China and figures significantly largely in the imagination of historians who study the Qing Empire (1644-1911), while connections with Russia, Europe and beyond tend to be ignored, as is its salience for post-Qing China and the contemporary world.
To be sure, Inner Asia looms large in the minds of historians and historical anthropologists of the Xiongnu and the Mongol empire, whose writings contribute to a better understanding of the world formation, especially East Asia.

Reading through the annotations, one discovers that the value of the dissertations are not only in their utility of original research, but in the theoretical breadth and comparative perspective that is often lacking in the more cautious published monographs.
One of the principles of social science and historical methodology is to review the literature, not only the dissertations themselves, but their bibliographies and literature surveys are helpful to the research endeavor.
