The original Sydney Station was opened on 26 September 1855 in an area known as "Cleveland Fields." This station (one wooden platform in a corrugated iron shed), which was known at the time as Redfern, had Devonshire Street as its northern boundary.
Central Station currently serves all suburban lines except for the Cumberland Line and Carlingford line, and all intercity lines except for the Hunter Line.
The platforms at Sydney's Central Station are numbered from 1 to 27, with 1 being the westernmost platform and 27 being one of the easternmost.

Except for the street section from Darling Drive (next to the Sydney Entertainment Centre) along Hay St to Sydney Terminal railway station, the track is built on the old Darling Harbour goods line, the new western extension continuing along the abandoned railway line.
Eventually the state government kicked in $16 Million to refurbish the former goods line to Lilyfield in return for extension of the service west with out the CBD loop, which is still 'on hold' until the cross city road tunnel is built.
The current and proposed routes for the Sydney light rail extensions were published in the 'Inner Western Suburbs Courier', a local newspaper for the inner west of Sydney.

A bike ride around the foreshores and back streets and parks of the Inner West is a good way to see the foreshores and historic areas of Leichhardt, Glebe and Balmain.
Follow the lane, which takes a curvy route along the line of the old creek way, watching for local resident's cars and for trucks (still some factories along here) and some rough bits of road, until a bicycle crossing at Styles St (take care here as cars often speed down the hill towards the crossing).
Turn right here (becomes Railway Pde) and follow along to an underpass of the Light Rail Way, through a pocket park to The Crescent, a busy road connecting to the City West Link.
