Innerleithen lies close the north bank of the River Tweed some six miles east of Peebles and ten miles west of Galashiels.
Innerleithen's success, both as a mill town and as a spa town, increased significantly with the arrival of the railway in 1866.
As is Innerleithen's other main claim to fame: two miles to the south lies Traquair House, the oldest continuously inhabited house in Scotland.

Innerleithen, a parish partly in Selkirkshire, but chiefly in Peebles-shire; and containing in the latter section, a post-office village of its own name.
In 1674, the parish of Innerleithen was enlarged by the annexation to it of about one-third of the old parish of Kailzie.
Three other factories have been erected in the vicinity within the last 9 years, and another 2 miles to the east; so that the place is now a well-famed seat of the same kinds of manufactures which have in recent years brought such large well-being to Hawick and Galashiels.

The hamlet of Innerleithen is first mentioned on record when Malcolm Canmore's illegitimate son (called the Maiden) drowned at the point where the Rivers Tweed and Quair meet.
His body was retrieved and sheltered by local people and monks and, as a result of the kindness, King Malcolm granted a charter of the local lands to the monks of Kelso.

Innerleithen is a large village located 7 miles (11 km) east of Peebles and 11 miles (18 km) west of Galashiels, in the old county of Peeblesshire at the confluence of the River Tweed and Leithen Water.
Innerleithen was an important woollen, spinning and knitwear centre and is most famous for its medicinal spring, made famous in Sir Walter Scott's novel, St. Ronan's Well (1823), and refurbished in 1826 to cope with visitors.
