Innes Ireland - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Ireland was born June 12, 1930 in Mytholmroyd, Yorkshire, England, the son of a Scottish veterinary surgeon.
Ireland's first serious year of auto racing was 1957, by which time he was running a small engineering firm in Surrey.
Ireland upset Lotus boss Colin Chapman and the team sponsors by giving up his car to Stirling Moss of the rival Rob Walker team at the 1961 Italian Grand Prix.

 8W - Who? - Innes Ireland
So Innes Ireland, who had been released by Chapman despite having scored Team Lotus' first Grand Prix win at the 1961 US Grand Prix and now engaged with BRP, suddenly found himself in the cockpit of one of the famous Sharknose Ferraris at the Silverstone race.
In practise Ireland's performance was not fully convincing, qualifying only for the second row, sixth position on the grid, but at the start of the race he shot into second position behind Clark's new Lotus 24 and in front of the BRMs of Graham Hill and Richie Ginther.
The weather was wet and the Ferrari obviously disliked this.

When Innes Ireland decided to write it, after his experience among the world's fastest men and motor cars, there emerged an intensely personal record of seven years of sweat and danger, laughter and pain, success and tragedy.
Ireland is outspoken, almost painfully candid about himself and the men he met, drank with and finally, diced with on race tracks throughout the world.
The book reflects Ireland's high-spirited approach to motor racing, for he was of the old school of drivers - the men who pushed their machines to the absolute limit for the sheer joy of driving.

 8W - What? - British Racing Partnership
Innes Ireland had qualified his new BRP a good seventh on the grid for the Dutch Grand Prix, which seemed to be one of his favoured tracks.
Innes Ireland at this time still felt he was a better driver than rising star Jim Clark and had no doubt about a good 1962 season with Team Lotus and the new 24 plus the 25 already on the drawing board.
Ireland would be to expensive for Chapman in the time to come, because his price money had risen from 25 to 50% in 1961.

As it was, Innes stood by his word that he would join the independent UDT/Laystall organization and turned down the BRM offer.
Innes, a former paratrooper, won the '61 US Grand Prix for Lotus only to be dismissed a few weeks later by Colin Chapman who saw Jim Clark as a brighter prospect.

 1961 NZGP
By the time the leaders were round to the pits Ireland was moving up on Flockhart to take fourth place, and a gap had already been opened up on Hill, Clark, Surtees, Salvadori and Hulme, with Stillwell and Glass hanging on and another gap back to the rest of the field.
In the meantime Ireland was holding on to fourth, but Flockhart had disappeared back in the field.
Over the next 14 laps Moss was pulling away at the rate of a second a lap from Brabham, whose motor was already sounding out, while Hill’s was distinctly hairy and he had decided to nurse it for the race in the hope of a placing.
