 The Sleeping Monk of Innisfallen
However, none will doubt that a monastery once stood upon Innisfallen Island, for its ruins may still be seen.
It is indeed a fairy island, although Ihave no fairy story to tell you about it; and if Ihad, these are such unbelieving times that people only smile at my fairy stories, and doubt them.
Centuries ago the monks of Innisfallen were popular, pious, and learned, and if you saw them coming along the road you didn't hop inside the fence to avoid them for they were the best of company at all times.

CATHOLIC ENCYCLOPEDIA: Diocese of Kerry and Aghadoe
It was this saint also who founded the famous monastery and school of Innisfallen, a lovely island in the Lower Lake of Killarney.
It was here that one of the greatest of Ireland's kings was educated - Brian Boru, who destroyed the power of the Danes at Clontarf in 1014, while his distinguished professor, Maelsuthain O'Carroll, was most probably the original compiler of the famous Annals of Innisfallen.
Another native saint, Finan Cam, was the first to build a church at Aghadoe, which in after times became the see of a bishop.

 Irish Ferries Enthusiasts :: Innisfallen
Innisfallen (2) sailing down the Lee (top) and British troop transferring to D'Innis after leaving Spike Island on the tender An Saorsart in the summer of 1938 (above).
At the time she was the only motor passenger vessel running to South Wales and proved very popular with the Cork-Fishguard passengers and in 1938 was the ship that took the last British soldiers based at Spike Island home.
A new Innisfallen was ordered in Germany and would be a sister to the new Leinster (that was being built at Cork), but more changes came when British Rail gave notice of termination of agreement that allowed Cork ships use Fishguard.

 KERRY
On the Lower Lake, local fishermen offer trips from Ross Castle to Innisfallen Island — a tranquil, wooded oasis where monks recorded Irish history up to the 12
Valentia Island is joined to the mainland by a bridge, while the two Skellig islands form a stark contrast in their inhospitable, rocky bleakness — the 640 steps to the summit of Skellig Michael can be climbed now just as they were thousands of years ago, when ascetic monks used the place as a retreat.
Sculpted from a limestone valley, innumerable artists have immortalised the perfection of its three lakes: Lough Leane, the Lower Lake, dotted with thirty islands; Muckross Lake, the Middle Lake, which has four; and the Upper Lake, with three islands.

 Black's Guide to Ireland 1872
The annals of Innisfallen are considered of value, more particularly in the history of Munster; but the general reader would persue without interest a dry chronological record of erimes, wars, and rebellion; list abbots, princes and clergy; and a special account of the petty dissensions and generally violent deaths of the ancient kings of Kerry.
The abbey, whose ruins are scattered about the island, is believed to have been founded in 600 by St Finian, to whom the cathedral of Aghadoe was dedicated.
Arbutus Island is one of the largest on the lake, being twenty-five perches by eleven.

It is an island in the Fergus, in the barony of Bunratty, and the parish of Kilconry.
The annals of Innisfallen inform us, that this monastery was built or repaired this year by Terlagh the son of Teige Caoluiske O’Brien, who presented the friars with holy crosses, embroidered vestments, and other needle-work, cowls, and every necessary furniture, beautiful book-cases, and blue painted windows.
Brien king of Munster and Domnhall king of Ionmhuinein recovered this island from the Danes by defeating Iomhar the Norman and his two sons, Amhlaibh and Duibheheann; 500 of the Danes, with Mark and his two sons, who fled thither for safety some time before, were slain in this battle.

Off Ballycotton on her easterly course the Innisfallen was taking a battering from heavy seas on her starboard beam which sent sheets of spray over the masts, radar and wireless aerials.
I well remember the date mentioned as I was sailing as senior second officer on the Innisfallen.

The Annals of Innisfallen mention that the island was attacked in 1057 by 'the foreigners of the son of Mael na Mbo'.
A Clonmacnoise chronicler claimed that Brian had violated the holy island by this raid and Brian himself may not have been too fussy over whether it was Viking of monastic plunder that filled his treasure chests.
By now Norman influence was on the increase throughout the land and in 1179 William Howell laid the island waste.

The Kingdom - 2003/06/05: A trip back in time is a journey worth taking
The sparkling sunshine of last Friday evening added an extra dimension to the age-old visual as pilgrims, mainly local, were expertly guided away from dry land to attend the annual mass on Innisfallen Island.
But not even obscene commercial anomalies can prevent the great outdoors from being savoured and admired and that is why it is so refreshing to see great traditions like the mass on Innisfallen being passed on from one generation to the next.
The mass on the historysteeped island is one of the few remaining examples of Killarney putting its spectacular local resources to good use.

IT is considered, with justifiable reason, to be the most visually spectacular spiritual occasion of the year in Kerry and the rare sunshine was considered an extra bonus at the annual Mass celebrated on Innisfallen Island on the Lakes of Killarney.
The Mass on the Island is an ageold custom in Killarney and, although numbers had dwindled considerably in recent years, there was no shortage of participants on this occasion with the warm embrace of the evening sunshine an added attraction.
