The first part is a 9-mile climb to the top of the divide between the Kuskokwim River drainage and that of the Innoko River, which flows into the Yukon.
A branch of the old trail, sometimes called the Seward-to-Nome Mail Trail, went west from Takotna to Ophir, a gold camp on the upper Innoko River which had its heyday as a boomtown in 1907 and was already fading when Iditarod sprang to life in 1909.
The branch trail continued west from Ophir, across the mountains west of the Innoko River to Madison Creek (another mining area on the lower reaches of the northward-flowing Iditarod River).

This is shown on Zagoskin's map as the east branch of the Innoko River which heads in a portage to the Takotna River.
They even come from their settlements on the Tlegon (upper Innoko River) and the Tokichitna (Takotna) Rivers, so far away from Chulitna, and they brought their families though at that time all of the natives are usually fishing.
The river barge had brought in a prefabricated kitchen which was to be attached to the school building for a lunch program.

The daily bag and possession limit for the Innoko River northern pike was reduced from 10 fish-no size limit, to 3 fish-only one over 30 inches in length, with the passage of an amended Proposal 152.
In the Unalakleet River drainage, any salmon removed from the water shall be retained and becomes part of the bag limit of the person originally hooking it.

This year we were in Aniak as we have been able to park and winterize the houseboat on the Innoko river making the long Yukon river trip unnecessary.
We were able to fly to the Unalakeleet river every day, although the last day on the Unalakleet for kings it did rain hard, and steady till twelve noon.
The slow fishing was contrasted by a beautiful day fishing the George river, a tributary to the Kuskokwim, one of the nicest places in Alaska to fish when the fish are not biting.
