 A Grab for Iron - Breakthrough for Innsbruck Scientists
Scientists from Innsbruck (Austria) have now been able to genetically block the iron metabolism of Aspergillus fumigatus mould and thus render it harmless to humans.
Bacteria can be overcome quite effectively with antibiotics, but there are as yet hardly any effective drugs against mould, which accounts for the fact that 80 percent of affected patients do not survive such an infection.
The working group from Innsbruck has been exploring the iron metabolism of mould since 1998, supported by research funds from the Austrian Science Foundation (FWF) and the Austrian National Bank (ÖNB).

 DNA test shows promise for identifying patients with colorectal cancer
Hannes M Müller from the Medical University Innsbruck, Austria, and colleagues investigated whether patients with colorectal cancer could be identified by testing stool samples for changes in DNA methylation-a form of genetic alteration that is common in colorectal cancer cells.
The researchers used a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay to identify DNA changes in stools from patients with the disease and from healthy controls, to assess the most promising DNA methylation markers from a long list of candidate genes.

All patients on the list were given 1,000 mg of calcium and 400 IE of vitamin D daily.
"The striking result of this study was that alendronate combined with calcium and vitamin D almost completely prevented further bone loss in the first four months after liver transplant," observed the researchers, led by Gunda Millonig of the department of gastroenterology and hepatology at Innsbruck Medical University.

Maybe more intense cooperation and opening of borders between cardiac surgery and interventional cardiology in a way that teams including members from both subspecialties work together in the OR, in the cath lab, or in a combined unit could push the acceptance of combined coronary intervention.

The patch, applied once-daily in clinical trials, is designed to continuously deliver rotigotine to the bloodstream through the skin (transdermally).
Werner Poewe, MD, of Innsbruck Medical University, Innsbruck, Austria, presented data on the effect of rotigotine on patients with early-stage PD. In this double-blind, placebo-controlled, two-part study, 273 patients with early-stage PD were assigned to receive either rotigotine (n=177) or placebo (n=96) for six months.
For the rotigotine treatment, patients were started on a 10 cm2 (delivering 2 mg/day) patch, increasing the patch size by 10 cm2 each week over three weeks to a maximum patch size of 30 cm2 (delivering 6 mg/day).
