  Inocybe geophylla
Inocybe geophylla is a very common species and is sometimes mistaken for small field mushrooms (Agaricus campestris) with disastrous results: it is very poisonous and its consumption can be fatal.
There are two common varieties of this species: the Common White Inocybe, Inocybe geophylla, and a variety sometimes referred to as the Lilac Inocybe, Inocybe geophylla var.
The white variety, Inocybe geophylla, could be confused with Agaricus campestris, which is usually larger, has a stem ring and does not have a silky cap.

 California Fungi: Inocybe geophylla
Inocybe geophylla is an exception to the rule that all small Inocybes are difficult to differentiate.
Although distinct within the genus, there are a number of other small white mushrooms that it could be confused with including Alboleptionia sericella, Marasmiellus candidus and some species of Hygrohorus.
Inocybe lilacina, also found in our area, is a lilac-colored cousin considered by some mycologists to be a variety of I.

 Inocybe adaequata (MushroomExpert.Com)
As I am treating it, Inocybe adaequata is a reddish brown to wine-colored species characterized by its hairy cap, its large size (for an Inocybe), the absence of cystidia on the gill faces, and more or less elliptical spores that lack spines or nodules.
As with almost all species of Inocybe, a microscope is required for positive identification.
Several field guides treat a mushroom matching this description as "Inocybe jurana," but that name has been synonymized with Inocybe adaequata, according to the Index Fungorum.

Solitary to scattered under hardwoods and conifers; in our area it is common with Monterey pine; fruiting from late fall to mid-winter.
In a genus known for small, drab, difficult to differentiate mushrooms, Inocybe sororia stands out because of its relatively large size and conic cap with a well developed umbo.
Other important field characters are the radially fibrillose to cracked cap surface and the strong green corn odor obvious when the cap tissue is crushed.

 The Genus Inocybe (MushroomExpert.Com)
In fact Inocybe is often treated less as a genus of mycorrhizal mushrooms in the Cortinaraiceae than as a mycological rite of passage; if you have not "put a name on" a few Inocybes at some point in your life, good luck getting your (Myco-) Country Club membership.
The concept of Inocybe has held up amazingly well under DNA scrutiny, which has even supported many of the traditional divisions within the genus (subgenera, sections, and so on).
There are some exceptions, of course, but the overall picture, originally painted on the two-dimensional canvas of morphology (physical features as determined with and without a microscope), has been given depth by DNA studies and is beginning to become a three-dimensional sculpture.

Pileus 3-10 cm in diameter, surface with vinaceous radially striate almost scaly hairs over the straw-colored background; gills medium brown, margins white fimbriate; stipe also showing vinaceous staining.
This Inocybe is characterized by its vinaceous cap color and large stature, separating it from the other local species with smooth spores and thin-walled cystidia.
An uncommon species around Chicago, it was found in 1996, 1997, and again in 2000, in five oak woodlands.

 Spore Prints #349, February 1999
Since I am studying the genus Inocybe, a collection of mushrooms with much the aspect of an Inocybe was brought to my attention at the PSMS exhibit this past November.
The collection, however, was a bit unusual in that it had an overall pallid color and white gills at a late stage of cap expansion.
Based on traditional Friesian emphasis, it would not be an Inocybe on account of the hyaline spores, which certainly would have yielded a pallid spore print at most.
