Inode - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The inode number is an integer unique to the device upon which it is stored.
A file's inode number will stay the same when it is moved to another directory on the same device, or when the disk is defragmented.
This also implies that completely conforming behavior of inodes is impossible to implement with many non-Unix file systems, such as FAT and its descendants, which don't have a way of storing this lasting "sameness" when both a file's directory entry and its data are moved around.

The Inode cache has to take care that the same buffer is used by two different inodes when they reside in the same block.
Inodes are delivered from cache or manufactured on the fly when the Inode allocator is presented with a file system and an inode index.
Inodes reside in contiguous storage on the disk, relocated by a value in the superblock.

Inodes can be shared among vnodes, so they have their own reference count.
The inode of the vnode is added to the end of the current directory along with the name of the file.
A file is truly orphaned when a vnode is released and its reference count is about to be decremented to zero, and when the underlying inode's reference count is about to be decrement to zero and the inode's link count is already at zero.

iNODE does not offer such functionality since it is a closed application in itself and due to the fact that it operates a vital part of the network infrastructure.

The iNODE's installation CD is the same whether you have purchased the iNODE system or you are installing it for trial or demo purposes.

 ONLamp.com -- Understanding Filesystem Inodes
Inode 2 is always the first inode of a filesystem and represents the root or starting point of that filesystem.
is a different inode entry in a completely different inode table than the inode 2 entry for "var." The only thing these inode entries share in common is the number 2, as they are both the root entry for their respective filesystems.
Knowing whether or not you've created enough inodes while leaving enough storage blocks is a matter of experience, as it depends upon what your FreeBSD system is used for and what types of files are created by your users.

There is an inode for each file and a file is uniquely identified by the file system on which it resides and its inode number on that system.
A Unix directory is an association between file leafnames and inode numbers.
A file's inode number can be found using the "-i" switch to ls.

 Inode - LQWiki
An inode is an element of an inode table which is an element of the filesystem.
When creating a filesystem on disk, a region mapping out the partition and structure as a whole is created, followed by the region of the inode table, followed by the actual data blocks which contain the files of the filesystem.
Each inode has a single unique number by which it is known to the system.

What is inode? - A Word Definition From the Webopedia Computer Dictionary
inodes provide important information on files such as user and group ownership, access mode (read, write, execute permissions) and type.
There are a set number of inodes, which indicates the maximum number of files the system can hold.
A file's inode number can be found using the ls -i command, while the ls -l command will retrieve inode information.

 Large inode support and EA-in-inode
Inode sizes must be a power of two and must be no larger than the filesystem block size, so for a filesystem with a 4 KB blocksize, inode sizes of 256, 512, 1024, 2048, or 4096 bytes are valid.
The 2 byte field starting at offset 128 (i_extra_size) of each inode specifies the starting offset for the portion of the inode that can be used for storing EA's.
Since the starting offset must be a multiple of 4, and we have not extended the fixed portion of the inode beyond i_extra_size, currently i_extra_size is 4 for all filesystems with expanded inodes.

Inodes are the things that live on disc drives, and can be regular files (you know: those things that you write data into), directories, FIFOs and other beasts.
The inode that lives in RAM is a VFS inode, and it is this which the dentry points to.
Most filesystems leave this as NULL, because all their dentries in the dcache are valid d_hash: called when the VFS adds a dentry to the hash table d_compare: called when a dentry should be compared with another d_delete: called when the last reference to a dentry is deleted.

Inode 0 can't be used for normal purposes and historically bad blocks were linked to inode 1, thus the root inode is 2 (inode 1 is no longer used for this purpose, however numerous dump tapes make this assumption, so we are stuck with it).
The Inode: The inode is the focus of all file activity in the file sys- tem.
There is a unique inode allocated for each active file, each cur- rent directory, each mounted-on file, text file, and the root.

Design and Implementation of the Second Extended Filesystem
However, they use some disk space, allocated for their inode and their data blocks, and cause an overhead in the pathname to inode conversion because the kernel has to restart the name interpretation when it encounters a symbolic link.
Block groups are used to cluster together related inodes and data: the kernel code always tries to allocate data blocks for a file in the same group as its inode.
It compares the block and inode bitmaps which were constructed during the previous passes against the actual bitmaps on the filesystem, and corrects the on-disk copies if necessary.

 Inode
In Unix computing, an inode or i-node is a data structure on a file system that stores basic information about a file, directory, or other file system object.
Whenever a program refers to a file by name, the system uses the filename to look up the corresponding inode, which gives the system the information it needs about the file to perform further operations.
In Linux, inodes are implemented as structs in the C header file

A tour of the Linux VFS
This inode is allocated when the filesystem is mounted and de-allocated when the filesystem is unmounted.
inode is the inode of the root directory of the filesystem.
Therefore, the role of a specific filesystem code is to provide a superblock for each filesystem mounted and a unique inode for each file on the filesystem, and to provide code to carry out actions specific to filesystems and files that are requested by system calls and sorted out by the VFS.

Hard links and Unix file system nodes (inodes)
Every inode in the file system has a unique number, and the file system locates the contents of a directory or file strictly by its inode number.
For each inode, no matter whether the inode is a directory or a file inode, a link count in the inode keeps track of how many directories contain a name-number mapping for that inode.
When a link count goes to zero in an inode, that means that no directory points to the inode and Unix is free to release and reclaim the disk space used by the inode and its associated disk blocks.

VFS inodes exist only in the kernel's memory and are kept in the VFS inode cache as long as they are useful to the system.
This VFS inode may be in the inode cache or it might have to be read from the block device supporting the file system of the mount point.
The VFS inode might be dirty and in this case it needs to be written back to the file system or it might be locked and in this case the system must wait for it to be unlocked before continuing.

The Universe of Discourse : Elimination of "f" system calls
What might be a big change is that A can dump the struct inode to a file and the a different process can read it back again, evading the increased access protections on the directory.
The cryptographic signature technique can fix this problem by restricting struct inodes to be used by a single process.
Some unix systems offer a experimental features for passing file descriptors around; this system only requires that the struct inode be communicated directly to the receiving process.
