Inquiry education - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Inquiry education (sometimes known as the inquiry method) is a student-centered method of education focused on asking questions.
The inquiry method is motivated by Postman's and Weingartner's recognition that the activities and behaviors of intelligent people ("good learners") at all stages in life focuses on the process of inquiry, not an end product of static knowledge.
In an attempt to instill students with these qualities and behaviors, a teacher adhering to the inquiry method in pedagogy must behave very differently from a traditional teacher.

Scientific method - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The history of the discovery of the structure of DNA is a classic example of the elements of scientific method: in 1950 it was known that genetic inheritance had a mathematical description, starting with the studies of Gregor Mendel.
Charles Peirce considered scientific inquiry to be a species of the genus inquiry, which he defined as any means of fixing belief, that is, any means of arriving at a settled opinion on a matter in question.
A "perfect" scientific method might work in such a way that rational application of the method would always result in agreement and understanding; a perfect method would arguably be algorithmic, and so not leave any room for rational agents to disagree.

MCKEON: Philosophic Semantic & Philosophic Inquiry TEXT =  VERSION 2
Ambiguities and contradictions are treated in two ways in inquiry: they are removed by choosing one of the several meanings of an ambiguous term or statement and by showing the others are absurd or irrelevant, or they are used by distinguishing the several senses and the appropriate regions of their application.
For all their ambiguity the differences between dialogue or the dialectical method, debate or the operational method, proof or the logistic method, and inquiry or the problematic method were stated in ancient philosophy, have run through histories of restatement and modification, and are still operative in contemporary philosophy.
The four methods distinguished in philosophic semantics may be differentiated unambiguously by the four modes of thought, and the characteristic operations of each as a method may be clarified by the mode of thought used to define it.

The question of whether the inquiry method is impractical and inefficient is addressed by Dr. Terry L. Hufford, who also learned the method and received his degree from Ohio State University.
He acknowledges that the number of concepts which can be covered adequately in a course are narrowed by the inquiry method But he points out that general botany is not an attempt to produce professional botanists, but rather to develop in students a knowledge of and appreciation for plants.
A simple example of the inquiry method used in Botany 1114 occurs early in the year when students are shown two sets of plants, identical in every respect except that one set has been grown in darkness and one in light.

Though the inquiry approach as such was not fully articulated in these "alphabet soup" projects, learning cycles which incorporated the approach were part and parcel of the teaching-learning process.
Science teachers who come to understand the educational worth of the inquiry approach in student attainment, who are trained in its procedures, and who are supported in its use, would be less likely to criticize the apparent slowness of this approach and more likely to utilize it in their teaching of science.
Even well-intentioned secondary methods course instructors who are desirous of providing an education supportive of the inquiry method of teaching may have no more idea about how to impart this education than the man in the moon.

7.4: Inquiry Models of Teaching   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-01)
Dewey proposed that inquiry is the "active, persistent, and careful consideration of any belief or supposed form of knowledge in the light of the grounds that support it and the further conclusions to which it tends." To Dewey the grounding of "any belief" occurs through inquiry processes: reason, evidence, inference and generalization.
While the research supports the inclusion of inquiry models of teaching in secondary science classrooms, there appears to be a reluctance on the part of the science teachers to implement inquiry in the classroom.
Inquiry is the active pursuit of meaning involving thought processes that change experience to bits of knowledge.

Because the inquiries serve as a basis for model building, they need to involve "sufficiently many" users: there have to be enough users to support the uncovering of generalizations about the nature of the task domain.
Normally inquiries are done 1-on-1, but I've had good results with 2-on-1 inquiries as well (i.e., two IT analysts interviewing one user), as long as the analysts are careful to put the user in the driver's seat and avoid intimidating the user.
When it's time to do the actual inquiry, it goes without saying that you will want to be on time, since this is really the user's first impression of the development team, and a lot hinges on the relationship that the development team can establish with the user team.

He speaks here of what he calls "the method of tenacity." If the method of tenacity is termed inquiry at all, it is degenerate inquiry, inquiry which is "shrunken to a point," so to speak; it is inquiry without investigation, unmediated by inconvenient environmental considerations.
The introjective methods lack a commitment to induction, that is, a commitment to a return to experience for confirmation or refutation; activities based on the conclusions of these methods may well proceed unproblematically for a longer or shorter time but are--experience tells us--liable to run afoul of the hard rock of reality.
The method is, in reality, an approach to the adaptive organization of behavior in general in the increasingly complex environment with which we are faced.

Appreciative inquiry "...refers to both a search for knowledge and a theory of intentional collective action which are designed to help evolve the normative vision and will of a group, organization, or society as a whole" (Cooperrider and Srivastva, 1987, p.159).
Appreciative inquiry, as a method of changing social systems, is an attempt to generate a collective image of a new and better future by exploring the best of what is and has been.
The basic process of appreciative inquiry is to begin with a grounded observation of the "best of what is", then through vision and logic collaboratively articulate "what might be", ensuring the consent of those in the system to "what should be" and collectively experimenting with "what can be".

 CFI: Method of Inquiry
The term inquiry refers to the evaluation of belief claims, many of which are largely unexamined in contemporary society-particularly basic beliefs.
we should always leave the doors open to further inquiry; we should not censor or block the objective examination of truth claims, and any belief claim that is accepted on adequate reasons and evidence should not be insulated from further inquiry.
The term "inquiry" was used by both Charles Peirce (1839-1914) and John Dewey (1859-1952), two leading American philosophers who maintained that it should be interpreted functionally by its relevance to the solutions of human problems.
