The Daily, Tuesday, May 3, 2005. Study: Food insecurity in Canadian households
Households were considered to be food insecure if the person responding on behalf of the household acknowledged any of three circumstances stemming from a lack of money: someone had worried about not having enough to eat; someone had not eaten the quality or variety of food desired; or someone had not had enough to eat.
While food insecurity was much less common in higher-income households, it was not unknown.

IUC Journal of Social Work Theory and Practice
In this article, the concepts of social security and social insecurity are discussed from the point of view of the relationship between a person and their society.
There is good reason for defining social insecurity together with the concept of social problems; hence all the insecurity people experience in their life cannot be placed under the heading of social insecurity, only that which results from social problems.
In describing social insecurity in terms of the relationship between the individual and the society, it is necessary to specify the concepts of person and society (Figure 2).

As food insecurity has come to be recognized as a public health problem and a serious social problem in Canada, there have been calls for assessment and monitoring activities to appraise the scope of the problem and evaluate interventions.

The focus on limited, inadequate or insecure access to food due to financial resource constraints reflects the recognition that, while financial resources are only one of a range of factors that operate to determine individuals' food consumption patterns, they are the primary barrier to food access among low income groups.
