SPLICEDwire Christopher Nolan interview for "Insomnia" (2002)
Fast-forward to May 2002 and Nolan's "Insomnia" is one of the biggest buzz movies of the summer.
Warner's owned the rights to the film about a complex murder case in a town north of the Arctic Circle, where the sun doesn't set in the summer, and much to Nolan's disappointment they'd just hired a writer named Hillary Seitz to pen an American version of the film.
His first feature-length film was a cleverly convoluted black-and-white 1998 thriller called "Following," about a young Londoner whose proclivity for fairly harmless voyeurism gets him framed for a major crime.

Insomnia is a must see movie, and a welcome change from the "blockbuster" summer movie scene of 2002.
Insomnia would have benefited, however, from more ambiguity of motivation - while the acting is top notch, especially on the part of Robin Williams, the connections between the characters actions and their motivations and decisions is too closely drawn by the script.
Insomnia works well without elaborate plot twists, however, it's mood benefits from a certain lack of ambiguity of action, although the ending is perhaps a little to predictable and cliched.

While David Julyan really isn't "brand new" to the world film music, his effort for Insomnia certainly qualifies him for "break out composer of the year," and since there is no such category (this year), he gets this auspicious award!
On the flip side, aside from "Across the Stars" the music for Star Wars: Attack of Clones eventually becomes excruciatingly "vanilla." In part due to my Star-Wars-lofty-expectations and, in part, due to some of the worst music editing I've heard in years, Attack of the Clones earns the biggest disappointment of the year.

 ToxicUniverse.com - Christopher Nolan - 2002 - Insomnia Movies Review
In fact if Christopher Nolan (of deservedly acclaimed Memento fame) had concentrated on the central characters’ personality defects without venturing into the titular disturbance, Insomnia might have been the fascinating movie it strived so hard to be.
From the extended opening shots of Dormer’s arrival in Nightmute to the multiple establishing takes that introduce almost every scene, it’s as if Nolan is returning to film school and haphazardly exploring the different uses of the lens.
While it's true that humans lose some sense of reality if they go without sleep for too long, this widely-known fact doesn’t necessarily make the best plot device for a film.
