  History of the U.S. Army Inspector General
In 1668, an inspector general of infantry and an inspector general of cavalry were appointed, with the principal duties of reviewing the troops and reporting to the king.
General Washington's preference for an IG answerable only to the Army chain of command prevailed, and subsequently inspectors general were ordered to report to the Commander in Chief.
The Inspector General (TIG) was responsible to the Chief of Staff, Army and responsive to the Secretary of the Army.

 General Information
The Inspector General advises the Secretary General, when appropriate, on any financial, operative or administrative aspect that in his opinion requires modification, to ensure the more efficient utilization of the resources administered by the General Secretariat and its compliance with norms and regulations, as well as with the commitments entered into with donor countries.

 Miami-Dade County - Office of the Inspector General
The Inspector General shall be appointed by the Ad Hoc Inspector General Selection Committee ("Selection Committee"), except that before any appointment shall become effective, the appointment must be approved by a majority of the whole number of members of the Board of County Commissioners at the next regularly scheduled County Commission meeting after the appointment.
When the Inspector General detects a violation of one (1) of the ordinances within the jurisdiction of the Ethics Commission, he or she may file a complaint with the Ethics Commission or refer the matter to the Advocate.
