The Inspiral Carpets is an alternative rock band from Oldham in Greater Manchester, England formed by Graham Lambert in 1986.
The Inspiral Carpets emerged, alongside bands like Stone Roses and Happy Mondays, from the indie scene of the late 1980s and early 1990s.
The guitarist for rock band, Oasis, Noel Gallagher, was orignally a roadie for the Inspiral Carperts.

Inspiral Carpets: Greatest Hits - PopMatters Music Review   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-21)
Behind the Roses and Mondays, Inspiral Carpets were always imagined as the third of a triumvirate, and viewed from this distance their contribution makes the scene appear small.
Inspiral Carpets appeared on a locally produced music compilation in 1988, back when the Stone Roses were still playing the Boardwalk every week, and the Happy Mondays were appearing stoned at small venues throughout the city, gigs that were either a fiasco or miraculous, and occasionally both.
Inspiral Carpets released their first official single in 1988, played a hometown mega-gig in 1990, and were creatively exhausted by 1994.

 The Inspiral Carpets
Their early shows (double headers with the Spacemen 3 etc) were attended by a tough looking scrum of post skinhead Perry boys who were decking themselves out on paisley shirts- it was a psychedelic revival but attended by a much more streetwise gang of ruffians than the sixties original.
Maybe that was because The Inspirals were always a punk rock band at heart and cranked the energy level accordingly.
The Roses and The Mondays became a pop sensation and the Inspirals were the final cornerstone in the triumphant Manc trio who were The sound of young Britain in 1989/90.

PIXELSURGEON | Reviews | Music | Inspiral Carpets
Inspiral Carpets - Cool As They might have described themselves as ‘cool as fuck’ but the Inspiral Carpets were never as cool as the Stone Roses, and rarely inspired the same sheep-like following of like-minded Madchester greats, the Happy Mondays, or the ‘little known’ band that involves the Inspiral’s former roadie…
Nevertheless, the Inspirals knew how to crack out a good tune or ten, and this collection includes tracks that would be hailed as classics, if only people had a bit more taste.
The Inspiral Carpets are often the Manchester band people love to hate, but at least half the tracks on Cool As are real classics, which sound as fresh and catchy now as they did a decade ago, while the rarities CD and DVD, while inconsistent, are nice bonuses.

Inspiral Carpets - Tom Hingley and Clint Boon @ Designer Magazine
The Inspirals - the band who don't say FCUK and who in the early 90s managed to cloth the whole of Manchester in their "Cool As F**K" T-Shirts.
Always a band to do things differently, The Inspirals sung about feelings and natural emotions when the rest of Manchester was getting off it's head and now in 2003 they're set to unleash a video for new single "Come Back Tomorrow" which crossbreeds The Monkees with Yellow Submarine and features the band as animated animals.
It's a very simple thing with the Inspiral Carpets - a very very good live band and just did very good 3 minute long pop songs that were very individual and didn't follow any pre-existent trend.

In 1993, the Inspiral Carpets undertook a low key tour to promote the album-bridging single 'How it should be'.
Mercilessly stripped of all its Soft Cell namby-pambiness, the Carpets' reading is driven by an angst-ridden vocal panted from the brink of despair.

If The Stone Roses were the ambivalent figureheads of the “baggy” scene, then the Happy Mondays were its awkward mates sat at the back of the class flicking rubber bands at the teacher and anyone else who tried to confiscate their ill-gotten wares.
Last but not least were the Inspiral Carpets, five lads of varying ages and backgrounds from the suburb of Oldham.
But of course, you can’t keep a good man down, and this summer the Inspiral Carpets are back, playing a handful of shows across the UK starting with two nights in their hometown of Oldham on 23rd and 24thth June.

THE Inspiral Carpets may not have enjoyed the huge popularity of, say, fellow Madchester members, The Stone Roses or Happy Mondays, but they certainly hit the charts more consistently than either of those two, churning out hit after hit during a prolific period during the late 80s and early 90s.
This greatest hits album, the first official collection of Inspiral Carpets memoraibilia, is a great reminder of the band in their heyday, and a true must-have for any fan of the band.
She Comes In The Fall is another great record, evoking fond memories of the marching girl band that was present on stage at Brixton, and in the video to the single, while The Biggest Mountain is a vocally layered gem, featuring Clint Boon's organ in a far more restrained mood.

Despite the shoegazing panache, Inspiral Carpets were essentially a garage band, making this greatest hits retrospective timely, but not especially accurate in terms of title.
By 1990, new vocalist Tom Hingley has learned to sing - and quite well at that - rendering the remainder of their material enjoyable, if not memorable.
