The title of Institute Professor is reserved for those few individuals who have "demonstrated exceptional distinction by a combination of leadership, accomplishment and service in the scholarly, educational and general intellectual life of the Institute or wider academic community," according to MIT's Policies and Procedures manual.
In 1989 Langer was elected to the Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences and in 1992 he was elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and to the National Academy of Sciences.
In addition to the prestige associated with the title, an Institute Professor has a distinct measure of freedom to define the scope and nature of his or her responsibilities.

Along with his position at Wistar, Dr. Trinchieri is a visiting professor at the Faculté de Mèdicine in Paris Sud, France, a Wistar Institute Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania and a member of the executive committee of the University's Institute of Gene Therapy.
The Wistar Institute, established in 1892, was the first independent medical research facility in the country.

Franco Modigliani, Institute Professor of economics and finance, became the sixth member of the MIT faculty to win a Nobel Memorial Prize and the second faculty member to win the prize in Economic Science.

 Tim Stearns named Howard Hughes Medical Institute Professor: 9/02
He is one of 20 professors from 19 universities whose appointments were announced by the Maryland-based biomedical research institute on Sept. 18.
An associate professor of biological sciences and of genetics, Stearns will use his HHMI endowment to create a "pre-grad" program at Stanford that is similar to established pre-med programs on campus.
In graduate school at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Stearns worked with David Botstein, now a professor of genetics at Stanford, whom he credits with shaping his interest in teaching.
