The Institute for Sex Research was incorporated in 1947, only a year before Sexual Behavior in the Human Male appeared in bookstores, but Alfred Kinsey's sex research had begun two decades earlier, during entomological expeditions with favored graduate students.
The Institute for Sex Research opened its doors in 1947, a private, nonprofit organization located on the second floor of Indiana University's Biology Hall, a few steps from the office Kinsey had occupied since his arrival in Bloomington in 1920.
The institute survived the lawsuit, the publication of Kinsey's two books about male and female sexual behavior, accusations of Communist activities, and the subsequent loss of its funding -- and exists today as the Kinsey Institute for Research in Sex, Gender, and Reproduction.

Those methods are making it possible for researchers to understand the causes of real-world problems, such as sexual dysfunction and high-risk sexual behavior (see pages 54 and 58).
But they are also giving researchers the means to explore basic questions about the nature of sexual arousal and how its different components--such as physiological arousal and subjective experience--are related to each other.
Researchers have not yet been able to pinpoint the source of the difference, she says, but some progress has been made.

Doctor Sex: that was what they called Alfred C Kinsey, professor of zoology, around the Indiana University campus in the 1940s and 50s.
In those days, sex was little discussed or studied in the university, aside from the bland, euphemistic "marriage and family" courses that did more to obfuscate the subject than cast light on it.
To Kinsey, all sex acts between consenting parties were equal and equally valid, and though he presented himself as a disinterested scientist, he was in fact a reformer out of the Progressive Era, and an advocate for sex.

summary, 1948:  Kinsey Publishes Sexual Behavior in the Human Male
Americans who claimed to be prudish about sex were anything but, according to the book.
At a time when psychiatry was dominated by Freudians who believed that homosexuals have disturbed personalities, Kinsey argued that male-male sex is just one of many "outlets" that are part of any man's sexual repertoire.
The charges were false, but the accusation alone was enough to end Kinsey's research grant.
