The Institute for Social Research (German: Institut für Sozialforschung) is a research organization covering topics such as sociology and continental philosophy, best known as the institutional home of the Frankfurt School.
The Institute was founded in Frankfurt am Main in 1923, where it was (and as of 2005 once again is) affiliated with the University of Frankfurt am Main.
The Institute re-opened in Frankfurt in the 1951 under the direction of Pollock.

 The Institute of Social Research Frankfurt/Main - History
Within the latter the academy for social and commercial sciences founded at the beginning of the century continued to be active and the representative building built by the Jügelstiftung in 1907 became the centre of the university which opened in October 1914.
On account of his research work he was appointed head of his own neurological institute at the beginning of the century within the Senckenberg Stiftung, which he incorporated into the new university as one of the eleven founding institutes with the proviso that it continued to be financed from donations.
In quickly resuming its empirical social research the Institute, which as a private foundation was part of the university and also assigned with the sociology seminars within the philosophy faculty, also won the support of younger staff to combine students' societal-theoretical education with empirical training.

There has been considerable media interest in the ISR’s research project Pacific Labour and Australian Horticulture, funded by the Australian Research Council, which is analysing the feasibility of bringing Pacific Islanders to the irrigated horticultural regions around the Victorian towns of Swan Hill and Mildura on the Murray River.
Meanwhile, the project’s Pacific researcher Nic Maclellan has been conducting field research in Tonga and Fiji and has been invited to present a paper on the research to date at the forthcoming conference on Globalisation, Governance and the Pacific Islands at the ANU in Canberra.
The ISR is one of the partners in the successful application to the Australian Research Council for funds to establish a Centre of Excellence in Cultural and Media Industries.

Following a non-fatal heart attack Grünberg was in 1930 by Max Horkheimer who would rapidly become the guiding of an intellectual current that was born his directorship at the Institut the Frankfurt School editing its journal Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung for Social Research) and writing essays defining critical theory of society.
In 1933 after the rise of Hitler the Institute left Germany for Geneva and then (in 1935) for New City where it became affiliated with Columbia University and where the Zeitschrift für Sozialforschung Studies in Philosophy and Social Science.
