Ivan Massow, chairman of London's Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA), said the UK arts scene, which once led the world, was in danger of being totally irrelevant.
But concept art is all hype and no substance, said Mr Massow, a millionaire businessman who was once in the race to be Conservative candidate for Mayor of London before defecting to Labour.
A spokeswoman for the ICA said Mr Massow's views were unlikely to change the gallery's criteria towards the exhibitions it stages, but she could not comment on how much influence he had over what gets shown.

London's Institute of Contemporary Arts (or ICA, as I'm going to conveniently abbreviate it to from now on) is a great venue for seeing interesting new art and cinema.
I've been a member of the ICA for several years now, though you don't have to be a member to attend events or exhibitions there.
If you visit the ICA as a non-member, day membership will cost you £1.50 on weekdays, and £2.50 at weekends, for admission to the institute's art exhibitions and the bar.

A component of the Institute would be public performance of course outcomes, which draws spectators to campus.
Each Institute would offer a certificate of completion, although ultimately the mini-courses could be linked to both a BFA and MFA program.

London's swanky Institute of Contemporary Arts has an ongoing series of "psychoanalytic exploration of films representing various forms of psychopathology and other emotional conditions".
It's been happening for a while and seems to be an ongoing project, but had totally passed me by.
Films are shown, and then discussed by members of the Institute of Psychoanalysis to try and better understand the social meaning of the movie and motivations of the characters.

If London and YBA's (Young British Artists) are currently the pivotal point of the Contemporary Art world the ICA should be the main stage.
How very surprising then to see that two foreign artists are the main exhibitors to start the new millennium: A Swedish photographer, Miriam Backstrom (born 1967, Stockholm) and Swiss sculptor Urs Fischer both unknown to UK audiences.
Obviously disenchanted with YBA art the ICA introduces Fischer as "a breath of fresh air against a background of British Art dominated by video and painting".
