The Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology or IITM is a scientific institution based in India for expanding research in monsoon meteorology of the tropics in general with special reference to monsoon meteorology of India.
Initially called the Institute of Tropical Meteorology (ITM), the Government of India gave it an autonomous status with a new name as the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) on April 1, 1971.
The institute functions under the Department of Science and Technology of the Government of India.

Scientists of the Institute participated in the cruise of Sagar Kanya under the INDOEX IFP-99 programme during 20 January to 12 March 1999 and collected observational data of concentration and size distribution of atmospheric aerosols, Aitken nuclei, atmospheric electric field and conductivity over the marine environment of Indian Ocean and Arabian Sea regions.
An intercomparison experiment, in a campaign mode, involving aerosol and radiation instrumental facilities available with the Institute and BARC was conducted at the Institute, during 28 December 1998 - 01 January 1999 for validation of radiative transfer model available with the BARC.

 History of Meteorology
Meteorology was studied and taught as part of Chemistry, Natural Philosophy and Natural History at Edinburgh University throughout the nineteenth century and for the first half of the twentieth century.
He was co-author with Alasdair Thom of Essentials of Meteorology, for many years a standard teaching text, and his research interest was the physics and dynamics of the upper atmosphere, a tradition now continued by Professor Robert Harwood.
On 1st August 2002, the Institute for Meteorology became part of the new School of GeoSciences within the College of Science and Engineering in the reorganised University of Edinburgh.

The Caribbean Institute for Meteorology and Hydrology (CIMH) is a training and research organisation formed by the amalgamation of the Caribbean Meteorological Institute (CMI) and Caribbean Operational Hydrological Institute (COHI).
Even though the two Institutes were amalgamated since the mid 1980's, the organisation continued to be known as the Caribbean Meteorological Institute up until September 1999 when the name was officially changed to reflect the dual role of the Institute.
