Materialistic science has tended to test knowledge by noting whether it leads to the ability to predict and control; while the consensus on validation of noetic sciences has not yet emerged, it seems clear that it will have more to do with understanding than prediction, and more with joining than control.
Because the noetic sciences are partially a process of rediscovery it is possible to anticipate what some of the essential characteristics will be.

From the first page of their magazine, I learned that Apollo astronaut Captain Edgar Mitchell founded the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) in 1973, to explore the inner cosmos of the mind with the same level of rigor and commitment that scientists had applied to understanding the physical universe.
Noetic sciences further the explorations of conventional science by rigorous inquiry into aspects of reality – such as mind, consciousness, spirit –; that go beyond physical phenomena.
In the article about ‘What are Noetic Sciences?’ I was struck by the following formulation: “For the first time in history we are beginning to create a growing, progressively funded body of established experience about humanity’s inner life – and particularly about the perennial wisdom of the great religious traditions and gnostic groups.

Institute of Noetic Sciences Review #59, March - May 2002
In the language of nonlinear science, the attractor that governed existence prior to the bifurcation has ceased to exist; the old attractor has died, replaced by a new one.
A deep and fundamental connection exists between the science of chaos and the fractal geometry of nature.
Science and its eternal truths seem to mock our despair in those days when we are facing a bifurcation in our life: What is a personal tragedy, or even the death of a few thousand individual humans, in the context of the eventual bleak fate of the universe?

*Nonlinear science concerns itself with the dynamic behavior of complex systems, that is, living organisms, ecosystems or even societies; chaos theory is perhaps the most famous aspect of nonlinear science.
The truths of science are not always comforting, though: “No,” astronomers tell us, “the sun won’t always rise.” In fact, they say, one day it will expand in a giant cataclysmic event, becoming a red giant and engulfing the Earth in a wave of fire.
A macroshift, therefore, is a civilizational transformation in which technology (or environmental change) is the driver, and the consciousness-evolution of a critical mass is the decider.
