About Notre Dame, the Baltimore Sunday Herald wrote, "Few institutions of learning are better known throughout this country than Notre Dame of Maryland, the famous college for women and preparatory school for girls under the supervision and instruction of the School Sisters of Notre Dame." The article, published August 28, 1900, included considerable praise.
At Notre Dame and in Catholic schools nationwide, lay teachers started to outnumber religious faculty because fewer men and women were choosing religious life, and many of those who had were leaving their orders.

Whereas the Department of Homeland Security made certain that the students at Notre Dame would not be subject to Ramadan's sympathies for terrorist Islam, David Cortright, an individual who has repeatedly blamed America for the 9/11 attacks is already serving on the faculty of the Kroc Institute.
The integrity of their institute's curriculum, the quality of education their students receive, and the survival of the United States are clearly not issues.

Notre Dame, a Catholic university, said then it was "deeply disappointed and concerned," but was optimistic the issue would be resolved and Ramadan would be allowed to take up his post.
A University of Notre Dame official was told recently by a contact in the State Department that no decision on the visa was in view, leading him to abandon his plans, he said.
