Carlow (Irish: Ceatharlach, meaning "four lakes") is an inland town in the south-east of Ireland in County Carlow, some 85 km (53 miles) from Dublin.
In 1180 with the construction of Carlow Castle by William the Marshall, Earl of Pembroke and Lord of Leinster to guard the vital river crossing.
Carlow industry has come a long way since the early 20th century - when the town became the center of Ireland's slow process of industrialisation with the creation of the Irish Sugar Company - then the cutting edge of industry in Ireland.

Institute of Technology, Carlow (ITC), originally Regional Technical College, Carlow, is one of the original Regional Technical Colleges, it is located to the south of Carlow, Ireland on Kilkenny Road, it was the first such college located and announced.
The institution was renamed Austin Waldron Regional Technical College in 1989 after a past CEO of County Carlow Vocational Education Committee, Austin Waldron, who was instrumental in helping the cause of the Regional Technical College in Carlow; it retained this name until 1992 when it resorted to its former name.
Their are approximately 3,000 students whose courses focus primarily on science, technology and business, these three disciplines are reflected in the colleges seal.

From his final position in the Royal Institution (which was, and still is, an applied research laboratory with a popularising remit; his public lecture-demonstrations were famous) he ran a sort of conspiracy known as the 'X-club', the objective of which was to further the interests of science; this included Huxley, Spenser, Frankland and others.
Carlow was among the first towns to have public electric lighting, which was inaugurated by Parnell in 1881.

In granting a certificate to the Institutes of Technology in the previous case, the Authority noted that the project was of a limited duration and that its size was restricted by the funding available, to approximately 0.3% of the total Irish market of IR£700m for hardware, software and services in 1997.
