The Institution of Engineers of Ireland (Irish: Cumann na nInnealtóirí) or the IEI, is the second oldest engineering society in the British Isles established in 1835 and currently representing over 21,000 members, primarily in Ireland, the institution accepted its current legal name in 1969 by an Act of the Oireachtas.
Membership of the institution is open to individuals based on academic and professional background and is separated into grades in accordance with criteria, including the Chartered Engineer and European Engineer titles.
The history of the institution can be traced to August 6, 1835 when civil engineers met in Dublin; the result was the Civil Engineers Society of Ireland, in 1844 the society adopted the name the Institution of Civil Engineers of Ireland (ICEI).

Chartered engineer is a professional qualification in Engineering (not a degree) offered by professional associations with a Royal Charter from the British monarchy similar to the Professional Engineer in other countries.
Examples of such institutions are the Institution of Engineers in India, the Institution of Engineers of Ireland, and the Institution of Electrical Engineers in the UK.
In Australia, the Institution of Engineers, Australia controls the qualification, although it is referred to as a Chartered Professional Engineer.

The agreement between the IEI and the Institution is now being used by the Institution's International Agreements Panel to form the basis of other agreements in Japan, Romania and some states in the USA and Canada.
The issue of Continuing Professional Development continues to be developed by the Institution and I would refer readers to the Article on CPD in the 16th of March 2004 issue of the Structural Engineer.
The Council of the Institution is being restructured and the Trustee responsibilities of the Council are being transferred to an Executive Board.
