Institution of Civil Engineers - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The initiative to found the Institution was taken in 1818 by three young engineers, Henry Robinson Palmer (23), James Jones (28) and Joshua Field (32), who organised an inaugural meeting on the 2nd January 1818, at the Kendal Coffee House in Fleet Street.
The institution made little headway until a key step was taken - the appointment of Thomas Telford as the first President of the body.
Mechanical engineer and tool-maker Henry Maudslay was an early member and Joseph Whitworth presented one of the earliest papers – it was not until 1847 that the Institution of Mechanical Engineers was established (with George Stephenson as its first President).

 Club UK - Careers
Mechanical engineering is the branch of engineering that deals with the design, construction and use of machines.
The mechanical engineers' job has become increasingly varied as it embraces more diverse technologies; mechanical systems are seldom purely mechanical and as such an engineer's knowledge of more recent developments in the computing, IT and electrical engineering fields is of the utmost importance.
To qualify as a chartered mechanical engineer you must have an accredited MEng degree or equivalent qualification in a relevant engineering subject, complete a period of initial professional development which includes formal and informal training and professional engineering experience, successfully pass a professional review and gain corporate membership of the Institution of Mechanical Engineers.

The Institution is concerned that too much emphasis may be placed on the quality of the environmental assessment rather than on the quality of the decision.
The view of the Institution is that it is the expertise within the relevant local planning authority that is best able to judge the scope of an environmental assessment, with their knowledge of local environmental and planning issues and with a 'finger on the pulse' of local public concerns.
The Institution of Mechanical Engineers is seeking to promote further awareness of environmental planning and sustainability through the development of professional development training.

On the adpation of the "Cambrian" engine to locomotive purpose.
The engineers of the country imposed certain limits to the weight taken on a single pair of wheels, and they had not cared to increase the weights if the engines were three-cylinder, because it had not been proved that the hammer-blow was less.
The Bridge Research Committee had found that th~ three-cylinder engine gave very much less hammer-blow on the bridges than the two-cylinder engines, and when they came to issue their report he hoped they would bear that in mind in considering the question of allowing greater weights with properly balanced three-cylinder engines.

In this respect a man of relatively humble origins became one of the world's greatest engineers and he was brilliantly astute in ensuring that his son, Robert, lacked for nothing in assisting the engineering of the early railways.
Their last major contribution was in 1842 when they were the first to provide engines with a link motion valve gear, a wonderful invention which was so eminently suitable for locomotives that it was still being used for new construction in the last great days of steam.
