Port wine (also known as Vinho do Porto, Porto, or Porto wine) is a sweet, fortified wine from the Douro Valley in the northern part of Portugal; it takes its name from the city of Oporto, the centre of port export and trading.
While Porto produced in Portugal is strictly regulated by the Instituto do Vinho do Porto, many wines in the U.S. use the above names but do not conform to the same standards.

As mentioned there was a diversity of Porto styles represented and my tasting notes on 50 of the wines I tried over the four hours, are only a "snap shot" of their character and should be read with that in mind.

Under the Denominação de Origem (DO), the Portuguese equivalent of the better known French system of Appellation d´Origine Contrôlée, only grapes grown within the officially demarcated region of the Douro Valley may be used to produce Port wine.
In a statement issued by the Instituto do Vinho do Porto, IVP inspectors working with inspectors from the Casa do Douro and the Comissão Interprofissional da Região Demarcada do Douro (CIRDD), conducted over 300 inspections and impounded questionable grapes during nine of them.
With this in mind Inspectors from the IVP, working with Inspectors from Casa do Douro and CIRDD (Comissão Interprofissional da Região Demarcada do Douro) were especially attentive to controlling the origins of grapes in order to guarantee that they came from within the region.

Porto is a coastal city in the northern part of Portugal which is where the journey from the Douro River Valley ends at the Atlantic Ocean.
     So, if you can’t make a trip to Porto or Lisbon, we do have some local alternatives to those wines that are famous for their fortification.  We also have some nice alternatives to fortified wines that make a nice addition to dessert.
However, if you do get to Lisbon, there is even an alternative to all those stairs; an electric tram makes the journey up and down the hill a couple blocks away.

In early February, the Instituto do Vinho do Porto (I.V.P. or Porto Wine Institute http://www.ivp.pt) again made a swing through the Pacific Northwest to kick off its second annual gala: "A Very Special Port Tasting." From here, this traveling Port tasting heads to Atlanta, Boston, Montreal and Toronto this year.
I found this to be a well made vintage Porto with finesse and fruit to please wine aficionados for the near and long term.
Porto Souza 1994 LBV - this is a late bottled vintage Porto from a vintage that speaks for itself, especially for those who love Port.

Built between 1732 and 1748, the Igreja dos Clérigos is one of the finest examples of rococo-style baroque architecture to be found in the city.
Located in a former palace dating from the end of the 18th century, the Museu Nacional de Soares dos Reis is dedicated mostly to the sculptor Soares dos Reis (1847-1889), venerated in Portugal most of all for his famous O Desterrado (The Banished), symbolizing saudade (nostalgia).
