After Instow was granted village status in 1923, sidewalks were put in, streetlights installed and a well was built.

Instow, similarly to Bideford, has seen some regeneration of its former self with track relaid in the station area and the buildings refurbished, after beating off plans for redevelopment by the local yacht club who had acquired the up platform, buildings and trackbed.
The Signalbox at Instow, mid-way between Bideford and Fremington, does not date from the opening of the line but was built in 1873 to replace the former gate keeper's hut and control the level crossing gates and the passing loop at Instow station.
This one-time block post for the two sections on either side was replaced in 1979 by an automatically operated crossing but managed to avoid being demolished, having been there purely to operate the crossing and its protecting signals since the abolition of the passing loop and siding in 1968.

The rear lighthouse is some distance away and situated on the other side of the by-pass, close to the place where the road leads back into the village.
Thus, as you are on the by-pass with Instow on your left and the turn to Instow village also on your left, take the right turn into the small road, drive just up the hill, park in the road and walk right up to the rear light which sits on high ground in a field.
A small bit of humour lies in the fact that there is a dummy bird of prey fixed high up on the front light - presumably to prevent damage to the structure of the lights from perching birds.

Instow sands are at the meeting point of the Torr and Torridge rivers thus offering bathing safer than the open sea but without the surf, but beware of the strong river currents, for this reason bathing at low water is not recommended.
