  ILS (Instrument Landing System)
Instrument landing system (ILS) facilities are a highly accurate and dependable means of navigating to the runway in IFR conditions.
The transmitter and antenna are on the centerline at the opposite end of the runway from the approach threshold.
The apparent sensitivity of the instrument increases as the aircraft nears the runway.

Chapter 4 Section 8 Approach Clearance Procedures
Clearances authorizing instrument approaches are issued on the basis that, if visual contact with the ground is made before the approach is completed, the entire approach procedure will be followed unless the pilot receives approval for a contact approach, is cleared for a visual approach, or cancels their IFR flight plan.
When authorized by an instrument approach procedure, you may clear an aircraft for an approach to one runway and inform the aircraft that landing will be made on a parallel runway.
Except in the case of a VFR aircraft practicing an instrument approach, an approach clearance automatically authorizes the aircraft to execute the missed approach procedure depicted for the instrument approach being flown.

INSTRUMENT APPROACH PROCEDURE- A series of predetermined maneuvers for the orderly transfer of an aircraft under instrument flight conditions from the beginning of the initial approach to a landing or to a point from which a landing may be made visually.
Special instrument approach procedures are approved by the FAA for individual operators but are not published in Part 97 for public use.
INTERMEDIATE APPROACH SEGMENT [ICAO]- That segment of an instrument approach procedure between either the intermediate approach fix and the final approach fix or point, or between the end of a reversal, race track or dead reckoning track procedure and the final approach fix or point, as appropriate.

Federal Aviation Regulations -- Part 97 -- Standard Instrument Approach Procedures
This part prescribes standard instrument approach procedures for instrument letdown to airports in the United States and the weather minimums that apply to takeoffs and landings under IFR at those airports.
Standard instrument approach procedures adopted by the FAA and described on FAA Form 3139 are incorporated into this part and made a part hereof as provided in 5 U.S.C. 552(a)(1) and pursuant to 1 CFR part 20.
The standard instrument approach procedures adopted by the FAA and described on FAA Form 8260-3, 8260-4, or 8260-5 are incorporated into this part and made a part hereof as provided in 5 U.S.C. 552(a)(1) and pursuant to 1 CFR part 20.

Instrument Approach Procedure Charts portray the aeronautical data which is required to execute instrument approaches to airports.
An instrument approach procedure is one that is prescribed and approved for a specific airport by competent authority and published in an acceptable aeronautical information publication.
When the ILS approach procedure is used but the aircraft does not have a glide slope receiver or the glide slope ground equipment is out of service, localizer minimums apply to the straight-in landing on that runway.

Another undesirable result of the old approach method (as used by some airlines) required that when visual contact was established, the pilot flying the approach on instruments would relinquish control of the aircraft to the pilot who had not been flying (but who now had visual contact) to take over and make the landing.
This would not be allowed when the old approach method (which required one pilot to fly the approach and the other pilot to make the landing) was coupled with the common requirement that the Captain must make the landing under adverse conditions (thus preventing him/her from flying the approach).
The experienced instrument pilot knows that scanning of instruments as well as viewing the runway environment (out the windshield) is done by moving the eyeballs not the head.

 CFII Instrument Class
Its objectives are to review instrument rating purposes, limitations and requirements, to introduce the student to proper instrument interpretation, scan, and to emphasize reliance on instrument indications to the exclusion of kinesthetic sensations.
The purpose is to gauge the student's progress to date in the areas of attitude instrument flying and basic instrument navigation skills, and to provide the student's instructor with written feedback on the student's readiness for introduction of instrument approach procedures.
Students are expected, through the application of their good judgment, to safely execute approaches using DME arcs, circle to land maneuvers including initiation of a missed approach during a circle to land, prompt and aggressive initiation of a missed approach when conditions warrant, and continuation to an alternate airport.

The key to executing a deadstick instrument approach is to observe the aircraft’s power-out rate of descent and then cross the final approach fix at an appropriately adjusted altitude to permit a glide to the runway.
Successfully executing a night-time, IMC Deadstick instrument approach to a full stop on the simulator is a challenge but also a very rewarding experience which increases a pilot’s overall management of situational awareness, aircraft performance, attitude instrument flying, and cockpit resource management.
Just as twin-engine pilots regularly practice engine-out-on-takeoff scenarios in a simulator, Richard encourages single-engine IFR pilots to regularly practice the deadstick instrument approach either in their own plane with a safety pilot or with a home PCATD system or using the full-motion advanced avionics simulator.

(2) "Initial approach altitude" means the altitude (or altitudes, in High Altitude Procedures) prescribed for the initial approach segment of an instrument approach.
(5) "Missed approach" is the segment between the missed-approach point, or point of arrival at decision height, and the missed-approach fix at the prescribed altitude.
The incorporated standard instrument approach procedures are available for examination at the Rules Docket and at the National Flight Data Center, Federal Aviation Administration, 800 Independence Avenue SW., Washington, D.C. Copies of SIAPs adopted in a particular FAA Region are also available for examination at the headquarters of that region.

After these basics, add whatever might be different about this approach, like if you're planning to use the autopilot or if there's going to be a different miss because of weather to the south.
In addition to the approach you're getting ready to shoot, have the other plates for likely approaches that may spring on you at the last minute.
