Instrumental rock is a type of rock and roll music which emphasises musical instruments, and which features little or no singing.
Instrumental rock was most popular during rock and roll's first decade (mid-1950's to mid-1960s), before the British Invasion.
Surf rock was quite popular in the late 1950s, and was generally rather simple and melodic--one exception being Dick Dale, who gained fame for his quick playing, often influenced by the music of the middle east, and frequently using exotic scales.

Rock and Roll emerged as a defined musical style in America in the 1950s, though elements of rock and roll can be seen in rhythm and blues records as far back as the 1920s.
The culmination of rock and roll as a socially-unifying force was seen in the rock festivals of the late '60s, the most famous of which was Woodstock which began as a three-day arts and music festival and turned into a "happening", as hundreds of thousands of youthful fans converged on the site.
While mainstream rock music was no longer able to shock or offend, new forms of music, particularly Punk rock and Rap emerged to fill this role; people who as youths delighted in the effect rock and roll had on their parents found themselves railing in a similar fashion against their children's music.

It seems like it would be impossible for instrumental music to be tongue in cheek, and one particularly wouldn't expect overt humor from a speed metal trio, but the second album by Colorado instrumental-metal trio (two lead guitarists and a drummer, plus various fill-in bassists) Gashead is a hoot and a half.
If you are into rock guitar, then this is simply stunning stuff and one of the best of it's kind in a while.
LandSpeedRecord misses nothing as an instrumental rock release, and while it inevitably draws parallels to forerunners Satriani and Vai, GasHead succeeds as exciting, visceral rock statement on it's own merit.
