Intaglio - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-06)
Intaglio is a printmaking technique in which the image is incised into a surface.
To print an intaglio plate, the surface is covered in ink, and then rubbed vigorously with tarlatan cloth or newspaper to remove the ink from the surface, leaving it only in the incisions.
The term is sometimes also used for engraved seals, which leave a raised design when pressed on to the material to be stamped, and is an Italian word that means the activity of carving (mainly) wood for decorative purposes (for example, in furniture).

Intaglio Glass from the Glass Encyclopedia
Intaglio is a form of design/decoration where the picture is cut away below the surface of the glass.
Sometimes called "hollow relief" intaglio cutting was done with engraving wheels as long ago as Roman times, and was widely used in Europe in the 18th and 19th centuries.
A popular form of design in the early to mid 20th century was to impress an intaglio picture of fruit into the base of glass bowls and plates.

The positive lines or pits are inked, the negative surface area is wiped clean, and the plate is then placed face-up on a press bed, with the damp paper on top of it, cushioned with felt blankets, and rolled between the press's cylinders under great pressure.
These presses are used for intaglio printmaking, which includes engraving, etching, dry-point engraving, aquatint, soft-ground etching, lift-ground etching, photo etching and gravure.
Intaglio presses are also used for relief and monotype prints (which have their image on the surface of a block or plate).

At this stage, the softness of the metal, means that the image is vulnerable to rapid wear from the wiping which is an integral part of intaglio printing.
For this reason, during a period in the history of intaglio printmaking, many engravings were produced on steel rather than copper plates, which are much more durable by virtue of greater hardness of the metal.
Very often, intaglio plates are made using a number of techniques combined together to produce the effect that is desired.

In intaglio printing, the text or image to be reproduced is not raised above the plate's surface, as in the letterpress method, but is engraved or etched into the plate.
Intaglio printing is the opposite of relief printing, in that the printing is done from ink that is below the surface of the plate.
In intaglio, or gravure, printing, the image to be transferred to paper is etched or incised into the surface of the printing plate or cylinder.

Intaglio is the collective term for the the print making techniques that encompass engraving and etching.
While copper is in many ways an ideal metal for engraving, it's softness which enables it to be cut with reasonable freedom, is a disadvantage, when it comes to printing from the finished plate.
This revolutionary technique, a special form of the then new discovery of electro-plating, enables a very thin "skin" of steel (less than two ten-thousands of an inch) to be applied to an engraved or etched copper plate, imparting the hardness of steel to the engravers favourite metal of choice.

Intaglio is a novel that follows the stages of a young woman's struggle to find a means of artistic expression that is compatible with her outlook and talents and that can convey her heritage and experience.
On the surface, Intaglio does not seem to have the cohesiveness or the sense of direction we expect from a novel.
Third, intaglio refers to the process of making intaglios and to "the process of being imprinted upon." Thus, this definition of intaglio suggests that the novel will explore ways in which people are imprinted by their experiences and by the culture in which they grow up.

Picasso began using the linoleum off his floor as early as 1939, but it was from the mid-50s that linocuts became an important part of his print production, as he imitated the bold designs and bright colours of the posters produced for the local bullfights near his home in the South of France.
Intaglio comes from the Italian word intagliare, meaning "to cut in.": the image being cut into a metal plate (usually copper or zinc) using either a sharp tool (engraving) or acid (etching).
The primary intaglio techniques are engraving, drypoint, mezzotint, etching, and aquatint.

 What Is A Print?
In an intaglio print the image is printed from a recessed design in the matrix, so that the printmaker creates the matrix by cutting into it the design he wishes to imprint on the paper.
To create an intaglio print the ink is pressed into the design cut in the matrix, the surface is wiped, and the ink is then transferred to the paper under pressure.
After that time lithography quickly replaced intaglio processes for most illustrative and commercial applications, for the design was easier to apply to the stone or plate, it was much easier to rework or correct a design, and many more images could be produced without loss of quality than in any of the intaglio processes.

 Technique of Intaglio Photogravure Printmaking
Intaglio prints, made from etched copperplates, are one of three basic types of hand-made prints.
They are immediately distinguishable from the other two types by their platemark, resulting from the pressure of drawing the ink out of the recess of the plate and into the paper.
In contrast to intaglio, when the ink is below the surface of the plate, relief plates carry the ink and the design above their surface.

‘Intaglio printing’ refers to any of various printing techniques, such as aquatint, metal engraving and etching.
An etched or engraved plate is smeared with ink, the surface wiped clean, and the ink in the recesses then transferred to the paper.
Because it was done with Plexiglas and not metal, there aren’t as many useable prints per plate, and because the inking is done by hand, each print is uniquely different.

Intaglio comes from the Italian word intagliare, meaning "to incise." In intaglio printing, an image is incised with a pointed tool or "bitten" with acid into a metal plate, usually copper or zinc.
As suggested by the name, planographic printing includes all those techniques in which the ink is neither pressed down into the paper nor raised above the surface of the paper, but lies in a flat plane on the surface.
The plate may be printed as a relief by rolling ink onto the surface or, alternatively, it may be printed as an intaglio by spreading the ink over the entire matrix and then wiping it off the raised surface.

Goldsmiths, armourers and gun makers had for many years coated their metals with acid- resistant wax through which they scribed decorations which were subsequently bitten into the surface through immersion in a mordant; but the earliest example of etching used for transferring an image to paper is dated 1513.
Damped paper is laid on the inked plate and then several layers of woollen felt blankets, and the whole 'sandwich' is passed under pressure through a rolling- press so that the ink is transferred to the paper from the plate's indentations (rather than from the un-engraved or un-etched surface, as in relief printing).
These (and other less common intaglio methods) are often used 'pure'; but they are also frequently used in combination.

In prints produced using the intaglio processes, the lines cut into a metal plate are filled with ink, the surface of the plate is wiped clean, and dampened paper is pressed against the plate with such pressure that it is forced into the grooves and picks up the ink.
Although some early intaglio prints appear to have been produced by rubbing the paper against the plate, perhaps with a metal spoon, in most cases the pressure required to force the paper into the finely cut lines entails the use of a special press equipped with rollers.
The simplest method for producing intaglio prints is drypoint, in which a sharp stylus or needle is used to scratch lines directly into the metal plate.
