Integrated Motor Assist - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Integrated Motor Assist (commonly abbreviated as IMA) is Honda's hybrid car technology, introduced in 1999 on the Insight.
It uses an electric motor mounted between the engine and transmission to act as a starter motor, engine balancer, and assist traction motor.
The theory behind IMA is to use regenerative braking to recapture some of the energy lost through deceleration, and reuse that energy later on to help accelerate the vehicle.

InsightCentral.net - Encyclopedia - Honda Insight Electronic Display
Motor Assist: The IMA is using battery power to help propel the car, the amount of assist is indicated by the illumination of amber colored bars on the right side of the display.
Note that since the IMA motor/generator will generate electricity whenever it is turning, slow charging can take place even when no bars are illuminated.
The BCM maintains the IMA battery state of charge in a range of 20% to 80%, which optimizes battery life.

hondanews.com > Honda Insight -- Integrated Motor Assist
As the IMA gasoline engine enters its mid- to high-rpm operating range, the electric motor assist ceases and power is solely supplied by the engine, which is operating in its high-rpm 4-valve mode.
If the charge state of the IMA battery is low, the motor/generator will also rechai~ge while the Insight is cruising, however, the advantage of regenerative braking is that it eliminates the need for a large, on-board electrical generating system, like the ones used on most parallel hybrid gasoline-electric drivetrains.
Then, when the IMA engine is operating with a richer air-fuel ratio, the catalyst combines these NOx molecules with the hydrocarbons and CO present in the exhaust to form water vapor, carbon dioxide and nitrogen.

 AE: Honda Integrated Motor Assist
With its integrated motor assist (IMA) system installed in a small passenger car, Honda seeks to attain an outstanding fuel consumption rate of 3.31 L/100 km of gasoline on Japan's 10/15-cycle urban test-mode.
The IMA comprises a VTEC variable valve timing/lift, direct-injection, lean-burn, inline three-cylinder, 1.0-L gasoline engine; a brushless dc motor/generator; a continuously variable pulley/belt type transmission; power drive unit; and ultra-capacitor.
The IMA is undergoing test programs in a fleet of Logo small cars, and is featured in the J-VX two-seat concept coupe shown at the 1998 Tokyo Motor Show.

The IMA engine's cylinder bores are offset to be over the crank throw at this point, so the piston and connecting rod push straight down, thereby minimizing side force on the piston.
Another innovative feature of the IMA system is the use of the electric motor to damp engine-idle vibration by application of reverse torque to the crankshaft.
Electrical power for the IMA system is produced by the IMA motor during regenerative braking and when cruising, and is stored in a bank of nickel-metal hydride batteries.

Also new with this generation of the IMA is the mounting of a 15cc air compressor to the electric motor which provides increased cooling capacity to the Accord Hybrid's dual-zone automatic climate control system (see Interior).
In addition to providing supplemental motive power, the IMA motor acts as a generator during deceleration and braking to recapture kinetic energy and recharge the IMA's battery pack during regenerative braking, and provides power to the dual scroll hybrid A/C compressor used in the Accord's dual zone hybrid automatic air conditioning system (see Interior).

There are many different kinds of hybrid vehicles - gasoline/electric, diesel/electric, full hybrids in which the fossil fuel engine and electric motor constantly trade power responsibilities, partial hybrids in which the electric motor acts as an assistant (during starting, for example) to the fossil fuel engine, and hybrids that also employ automatic cylinder deactivation technology.
With the assistance of the electric motor, the engine engages when the brakes are released and the accelerator pedal is depressed.
With Integrated Motor Assist, the horsepower equivalent rises to 255 at 6,000 rpm, and the torque equivalent increases to 232 foot-pounds at 5,000 rpm.
