  Protecting System Integrity
The basic idea behind system integrity is this: by periodically monitoring the changes that occur to a computer's files and directories, it becomes a simple matter to later determine 1) if a machine has been exploited, and 2) what changes were made to the system by the exploit.
Without system integrity, it is difficult to detect if an exploit has occurred, and next to impossible to perform a comprehensive cleanup of the machine, short of a complete OS and application reinstall.
System integrity checking is only one piece in the puzzle of computer security, but clearly it's a valuable one—and one that is becoming more important every day.

INTEGRITY is also the first operating system to begin Common Criteria security evaluation at EAL6+, a level of assurance that has never been achieved by any other operating system (http://www.ghs.com/news/20050829_eal6_skpp.html).
The same operating system technology forms the basis for INTEGRITY Workstation which was developed for next-generation secure desktop and server applications, such as multi-level secure PCs for the military and intelligence communities, IT systems such as SCADA that are critical to homeland security, and financial banking systems.

Enhancing File System Integrity Through Checksums   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-05)
A stackable file system has many advantages: significant among them being minimal development overhead, portability, no change to the existing file systems etc. When it is easy to develop a stackable file system, there are some operations that cannot be done using it.
Since a stackable file system has the responsibility of being good to a variety of underlying file systems, it provides a higher level abstraction to the level of a file, which makes certain lower level operations almost impossible to perform from the stackable level.
In UNIX-like operating systems where accessing the raw disk is easy, a malicious user can attempt to modify file data by directly accessing the disk which the file system would have no knowledge of.

 SoftClan Integrity 2.5
Integrity 2 protects a system from being harmed by viruses when a computer is most vulnerable -- the time between anti-virus updates and when unknown viruses attempt to do harm to the system.
Integrity 2 is the ideal complement to any anti-virus program, because it avoids the destructive action of any malicious virus (known or unknown) over the critical system files.
Integrity 2 will NOT allow your critical system files, or personal files stored in the "shielded" folder to be deleted or altered, either by accident or due to rogue applications, installers, uninstallers or a careless user.

Windows rootkits of 2005, part three
Although once a computer system has been subverted by a rootkit it is extremely difficult to detect or eradicate the rootkit, there are still some different methodologies that detect the rootkit that have worked to varying degrees.
System files are scanned for a sequence of bytes that comprise a "fingerprint" that is unique to a particular rootkit.
Memory integrity checking is provided by comparing the code sections for important system libraries and drivers on disk with their corresponding loaded images in memory.

Because the monitoring function is performed by a native INTEGRITY application, it cannot be subverted or disabled by software running under a guest operating system.
The INTEGRITY RTOS is the first and only operating system to be certified under the "POSIX(R): Certified by IEEE and The Open Group" program to the 1003.1 -2003 System Interfaces Product Standard and is listed on the certification register at http://get.posixcertified.ieee.org/register.html.

Runtime Integrity and Presence Verification for Software Agents
With 97 percent of U.S. enterprise networks using perimeter firewalls, and 72 percent employing intrusion detection systems, 55 percent of networks (2005 CSI/FBI Computer Crime and Security Survey) were still attacked by worms or viruses, and 95 percent experienced internal system penetration or some kind of unauthorized access.
The integrity measurement manager, or IMM, performs critical integrity and execution-detection checks on the protected host agent to make sure the agent has not been tampered with and is still executing.
The integrity manifest is used by the ISM to verify the integrity of the host agent.

If Linux is burned into ROM or flash memory in a missile, a bomb, or a tank, the system will have to be recalled to the factory or technicians will have to be deployed into the field at great cost to retrofit every system.
If these systems are deployed in a war zone, soldiers under fire are going to be very unhappy when you take away their weapons or defenses to patch security holes.
Systems that are buried underground, or under the sea, or in space, or in foreign countries will be especially difficult and expensive to recall and retrofit.

INTEGRITY PC is an extension to the INTEGRITY real-time operating system (RTOS) that enables developers of high-security and high-reliability systems to incorporate guest applications and operating systems—such as Linux—that do not otherwise satisfy a system’s security and reliability requirements.
An impenetrable wall around each guest operating system ensures that errant, insecure, or malicious code can never compromise the security or reliability of the rest of the system—either inadvertently or via a hostile attack.
Without INTEGRITY PC, legacy software would need to be re-written before it could be used in a secure system—both to ensure that the software provides adequate security assurance and to use an underlying secure operating system.
