Intel 80386 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Intel 80386 is a microprocessor which was used as the central processing unit (CPU) of many personal computers from 1986 until 1994 and later.
Designed and manufactured by Intel, the i386 processor was taped-out in October of 1985.
Though Intel would shortly introduce the 80486 and eventually the Intel Pentium line of processors, the support in the 386 for the 32-bit flat memory model would be arguably the most important feature change until the release of EM64T (introduced by AMD under the name AMD64) in 2004.

The 80186 was an improvement on the Intel 8086 and Intel 8088.
The Intel 8086 was based on the design of the Intel 8080 and Intel 8085 (it was source compatible with the 8080) with a similar register set, but was expanded to 16 bits.
Intel bubble memory was on the market for a while, but faded away as better and cheaper memory technologies arrived.

Intel's Ted Hoff felt differently; he was the first person to recognize that the new silicon-gated MOS technology might make a single-chip CPU (central processing unit) possible.
In fact, Intel implemented an "s-spec" rating which is marked on each Pentium CPU which tells the owner some key data about the processor in order to make sure they have their motherboard set correctly.
Intel also did some re-working of the P4's internal cache in order to nullify the effects of a mistake in branch prediction that can be a real lag with a 20-stage pipeline.

A range of Intel CISC microprocessors which is part of the Intel 80x86 family of processors.
The 486s are very similar to their immediate predecessor, the Intel 80386DX.
The main differences are that the 486 has an optimised instruction set, has an on-chip unified instruction and data cache, an optional on-chip floating-point unit (FPU), and an enhanced bus interface unit.

The Intel 80386DX was the first true 32-bit processor used on the PC platform.
The 80386DX was the first to use pipelining to allow much improved processor performance through the use of much higher clock frequencies.
Intel only produced the 386DX up to 33 MHz (presumably to prevent overlapping into the 486's performance range) while AMD and Cyrix produced a 40 MHz version as well.

The major difference between the 80386DX processor and the 80386SX processor is that the DX flavor is a 32-bit processor, while the SX flavor is a 16-bit processor.
This time, Intel was trying to attract customers who could not justify the price of the more functional chip, so Intel simply downgraded the 80486DX, marketing it as a different chip and selling it at a lower price.
Intel decided to develop a new standard for upgrading a processor on system boards, beginning with the 80486 chips and continuing with the Pentium class processors.
