The Tanaiste said that the announcement was a major coup for Intel Ireland management and staff, for IDA Ireland and for the Irish economy, which has been battered in recent years as other manufacturers have departed for lower cost regions.
However, Intel has recently experienced some trouble with certain aspects of the 90nm process and earlier this month it said that technical problems meant that it would have to abandon work on its "Tejas " 90nm chip, in favour of technology that will see it build faster chips, though weaker cores.
