IntelliStar - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The IntelliStar is the fifth generation successor to the WeatherStar systems used by the American cable TV and satellite TV channel The Weather Channel (TWC), for inserting local forecast and current weather information (such as the "Local on the 8s" portion of their program schedule) into TWCs programming.
A modified version of the IntelliStar is also used by TWC for their WeatherScan service, which is basically a 24/7 version of the local WeatherStar/IntelliStar-generated segments on TWC, and carried on a separate channel on those cable TV systems carrying WeatherScan.
It was revived for the IntelliStar in 2004.

 [No title]
IntelliStar refers to each TWC digital platform server housed at the cable headends of the network's clients as well as a system that also includes the host device, which feeds each server from The Weather Channel, plus centralization control and distribution capabilities between the two, Shield explained.
IntelliStar also outputs an MPEG format to improve bandwidth efficiency-by four to six times, depending on the headend and its configuration, said Ross Kalber, TWC's VP of Engineering.
Although plans for the Intellistar platform now are limited to cable television, Shields said it could eventually expand to other distribution systems.

In addition to its well-trafficked weather.com Web site, TWC is expanding its IntelliStar local forecasts-now available in nearly 900 metro areas (and targeted for 1,700 markets by September).
IntelliStar's roots are in previous TWC "Star" technologies, which used addressable receivers at the headend through which local conditions and forecasts are delivered.
For example, Miller notes that the new IntelliStar facilities "recognize if there are no changes in weather patterns and will go on to show something else," thus optimizing its processing power.
