"Definitions, Dictionaries, and Meanings", by Norman Swartz, Dept. of Philosophy, Simon Fraser University
In giving an intensional definition for a term, we give a set of conditions which are each logically necessary and which are jointly logically sufficient for the correct application of the term.
Definition by ostension is restricted to terms whose extensions include members which exist at present or in the very near future and which, further, are in one's immediate vicinity.
The Classical Theory of Definition has two principal tenets: (1) that a 'proper' intensional definition states in the definiens the logically necessary and sufficient conditions for the application of the definiendum; and (2) that there are intensional definitions for each of the class terms (e.g.

Definition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A stipulative definition is the specification of a meaning adopted or assumed specifically for the purposes of argument or discussion in a given context.
A persuasive definition "is a type of definition in which a term is defined in such a way as to be an argument for a particular position (as opposed to a lexical definition, which aims to be neutral to all usages), and is deceptive in that it has the surface form of a dictionary definition."
The definition of a concept, or of (a given sense of) a word or phrase, is a description of its intension—that is, the set of properties that characterizes all and only members of the extension of the word; the extension is all the things that the concept, word, or phrase applies to.

Intensional definition - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Definition by genus and difference, in which something is defined by first stating the broad category it belongs to and then distinguished by specific properties, is a type of intensional definition.
Intensional definition also applies to rules or sets of axioms that generate all members of the set being defined.
Similarly, an intensional definition of a game, such as chess, would be the rules of the game; any game played by those rules must be a game of chess, and any game properly called a game of chess must have been played by those rules.

A persuasive definition is a definition formulated and used persuasively to resolve a dispute by influencing attitudes or stirring emotions, often relying on the use of emotive language.
The conventional intension of a general term consists of the commonly understood attributes of the objects it denotes, the conventionally agreed upon criteria we use in deciding, about any object, whether it is part of the term’s extension.

I'm curious about wording of this definition of "definition": :the set of properties that characterizes all and only members of the extension of the word This appears to be a broader definition than one in terms of "individually necessary and jointly sufficient" conditions.
The real problem in defining definition is that the definition of definition depends upon the definition of definition.

 Chemistry - Extensional definition
An extensional definition of "nation" would be all the nations in the world; an extensional definition of "ocean" would be pointing out all the oceans.
Extensional definitions are used when listing examples would give more applicable information than other types of definition, and where listing the members of a set tells the questioner enough about the nature of that set.
The opposite approach is the intensional definition, which defines by listing properties that a thing must have in order to be part of the set captured by the definition.

However, one of the annoying things about intensional definitions is precisely that they are general and can be removed from perception, which allows you to string together words into definitions, where there are no real-word existents that the definition (term) can refer to.
The intensional meaning of 'man' would in my opinion be the sum of our knowledge about men - all the things that let us recognise a man as being a 'man' (as opposed to a cat or dog), as well as all the non-essential meanings which the word 'man' has in our language.

I first present the standard intensional definition of a property, which is formulated in terms of possible worlds, and outline some of the philosophical problems this definition leads to.
However, the fact that the definition is counterintuitive is not a decisive argument; it may be argued that the abstract character of properties is merely a cosmetic feature of the intensional semantics -- as long as the semantics produces the right results, the technical form of the semantic concepts is not so important.
In contrast to the traditional definition in intensional semantics that was presented in Section 2, this definition presumes neither the concept of an individual nor the concept of a possible world.

A definition delimits or describes the meaning of a concept or term by stating the essential properties of the entities or objects denoted by that concept or term.
A definition is designed to settle a thing in its compass and extent; an explanation is intended to remove some obscurity or misunderstanding, and is therefore more extended and minute; a description enters into striking particulars with a view to interest or impress by graphic effect.
An essential definition states what are regarded as the constituent parts of the essence of that which is to be defined; and an accidental definition lays down what are regarded as circumstances belonging to it, viz., properties or accidents, such as causes, effects, etc.” Whately.

If definitions were always presented using some markup that minimally indicates what the definiens is and which part of a document constitutes the definition, quite a many useful things could be done.

We call this operation knowledge extraction, because the extensional definition of the knowledge units in C is a subset of the extensional definition of knowledge units in P. So, it "extracts" from P only part of its semantic content.
One of the particularities of this operator is that the extensional definition of the knowledge units in C necessarily contains elements that are not originally in the extensional definition of knowledge units in P. They have been added during the process of knowledge generation.

Another rare blunder is to consider that "intensional is inside my head, extensional is outside my head," as if what happen inside one's head was only 'abstract.' Of course it is not and we have some vivid PET imagery to prove it.
