	Intentional community - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
		The members of an intentional community typically hold a common social, political or spiritual vision and share responsibilities and resources.
		Intentional communities include cohousing, residential land trusts, ecovillages, communes, kibbutzim, ashrams, and housing cooperatives.
		The most common form of governance in intentional communities is democratic (64%), with decisions made by some form of consensus decision-making or voting.

		Everybody, whether by conscious choice or not, is participant in many communities: communities of family and friends; geographical communities of "place" such as neighbourhoods, regions and countries; communities of interest; communities of religion and of culture and of ancestry; communities of the marketplace and of political jurisdiction; and even communities of the imagination.
		This was evident in their beginning to use the phrase "intentional community" and to feel comfortable with the fact that the community emerging, beyond the nation state, was not only an intentional development but a community that itself had intentionality.

	What is an Intentional Community?
		In essence, an intentional community is a group of people coming together in a place they create to live in some particular way.
		The variety of intentional communities is nearly infinite: some are religious, some are not; politics run the gamut; they are large and small, rural and urban, ecologically minded and materialistic.
		The term "community" is often used as shorthand for "intentional community"; however, this is not meant to imply that intentional communities are the only kind of real community there are, only to help get around the fact that "intentional community" is such a mouthful.

		Cohousing communities are made of individual households, and a household is most often a nuclear family or a single adult with children.
		One of the more destructive forces in intentional community is the need for its members who have not found a loving sexual relationship inside the community to seek this relationship outside the community.
		Some intentional communities may choose to confront members who are no longer actively contributing to the community, or who have taken live-in lovers whose values differ substantially from those held by the community.

	How to Save the World
		Intentional Communities are not, as some believe, isolated communes or anti-technology cults.
		The neighbours try to block the establishment of the community, fearing "a bunch of crazy pot-smoking hippie types" will be a bad influence on their families, and insist that only one 'family' be allowed to reside in the building, and that no further buildings be allowed.

	Community Membership, intentional community
		As to the community, my wife and I, as well as a few others, have thought that the physical layout would include a community hall or building that all would have access to and would have various functions, however, each member would have their own dwelling, however humble.
		For us an intentional community is a group of persons who choose to live in association, for a common purpose, with shared values, cooperatively to some extent, with harmony in sharing enjoyments.

	Creating Intentional Community
		I still haven't lived in a commune, and doubt I ever will - but I still hope that my partner and our children and I will some day find or be part of creating an intentional community.
		You might not have run across the phrase intentional community (IC) before, and be wondering why I'd differentiate between an IC and a commune, so I suppose I should explain.
		Sharing a huge home with enough personal and communal space for more than one nuclear family would be even better, but those kinds of houses are few and far between and we're not able to design and build our own right now.
