 Herbert Blumer's Symbolic Interactionism
Symbolic Interactionism as thought of by Herbert Blumer, is the process of interaction in the formation of meanings for individuals.
Although Symbolic Interactionism is a good theory by the five humanistic standards, there is a critique of the whole basis for it.
While Blumer insists that the interpretive process and the context in which it is done are a vital element in the person's use of meaning and formation thereof, others view the use of meaning as simply the calling upon and application to specific situations of previously held meanings (Society for More Creative Speech, 1996).

Soci 333 – Introduction to Symbolic Interactionism
Symbolic interactionism is far more open, understanding itself as a diffuse collection of interests in interaction.
We all need some kind of veil, but if it is too thick, others will find us less than engrossing and interaction will falter; if it is too thin, inappropriate feelings may "flood out" as Goffman frequently worries (he is consistently worried about scenes of "flooding out"; recall here Alexander’s argument about presuppositions).
The argument resolves itself in an assertion of the collectivism in interactionism: "but in this case the disguise is socially standardized; it is applied by the individual but not tailored by himself to his own particular needs" (243b).

Unlike both the consensus (structural functionalist) and conflict perspectives, it does not stress the idea of a social system possessing structure and regularity, but focuses on the way that individuals, through their interpretations of social situations and behavioural negotiation with others, give meaning to social interaction.
George H. Mead (1863-1931), a founder of symbolic interactionism, saw interaction as creating and recreating the patterns and structures that bring society to life, but more recently there has been a tendency to argue that society has no objective reality aside from individual interaction.
This latter view has been criticized for ignoring the role of culture and social structure in giving shape, direction and meaning to social interaction.

Conrad has locked himself into a horrible self-fulfilling prophecy, a prophecy in which he is an unlovable, worthless member of his community.
