Interceptor aircraft - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
An interceptor aircraft (or simply interceptor) is a type of fighter aircraft designed specifically to intercept and destroy enemy aircraft at great speed, particularly bombers.
A number of such aircraft were built in the period starting just prior to World War II and ending in the late 1960s, when they became less important due to the shifting of the strategic bombing role to ICBMs.
The result is that interceptors often looked very impressive on paper, typically outrunning, outclimbing and outgunning less dedicated escort fighter designs, yet they tend to fare poorly in combat against those same "less capable" designs.

Interceptor should have a range of 1000 miles, be controllable from a launch/control aircraft such as a modified 777, and have a ceiling of over 75,000 feet.
To increase the range without significantly increasing the size of the aircraft, it may be possible to boost the fuel fraction to.45, which would increase the maximum gross weight to 10,500 lbs and thus increase the range of the interceptor to 317 miles at 80,000 feet at a speed of Mach 4.
Carrier aircraft would be a modified cargo aircraft and would consist of a bay area which carries the aircraft and a rack system which lowers the aircraft into the airstream, allowing the engine to be lit.

During the early Cold War years, defensive interceptor aircraft designed to counter Soviet bombers over this terrain had to be capable of long-range operation, day or night, in any kind of weather, with a high degree of reliability.
They also decided to design and manufacture these aircraft in Canada, as a hard lesson was learned during World War II when the Canadian government found that it was low on the priority list for new equipment and was dependant upon other countries for the supply of first line aircraft.
The damping system was duplicated in yaw (side-to-side movement of aircraft's nose), however, as this was the critical (directional) axis and of major importance to the safety of the airplane in the high speed range.

Additionally, the interceptor aircrews will constantly keep in mind that maneuvers considered normal to a fighter aircraft may be considered hazardous to passengers and crews of nonfighter aircraft.
NOTE 2-If the intercepted aircraft is not able to keep pace with the intercepting aircraft, the latter is expected to fly a series of race-track patterns and to rock its wings each time it passes the intercepted aircraft.
DAY or NIGHT-If it is desired that the intercepted aircraft follow the intercepting aircraft to an alternate aerodrome, the intercepting aircraft raises its landing gear and uses the Series 1 signals prescribed for intercepting aircraft.

Air Force Technology - MiG-25P Foxbat - Interceptor Aircraft
The MiG-25P is an interceptor aircraft for countering air targets in all weather conditions, by day and by night, and in dense hostile electronic warfare environments.
To improve the aircraft's longitudinal stability, and to avert stall at steep angles and subsonic speed, there are two shallow upper-surface fences on each wing.
The aircraft is fitted with a reconnaissance station, aerial camera, topographic aerial camera, the Peteng sighting and navigation system to bomb programmed targets, and electronic countermeasures (ECM) equipment, which includes active jamming and electronic reconnaissance systems.

The MiG-25 high altitude, high speed interceptor was initially developed to counter the Mach 3 XB-70 Valkyrie bomber under development in the US in the late 1950s and early 1960s.
The two main design considerations for the new aircraft were speed and high altitude performance, something that was attained at the expense of maneuverability.
The new inteceptor was made largely of steel and titanium to withstand the effect of kinetic heating, and sported an old-fashioned but very powerful radar as well as four examples of the largest air-to-air missile yet deployed.

Bomarc B was more an unmanned interceptor aircraft than a missile in common sense: It was 13.3 meter long, weighed 7260kg, and had a range of 710km.
The simultaneous development of aircraft, engines, radar system and missiles was a high-risk affair, with a large probability that at least one of these programmes would be a failure.

While the vast majority of aircraft scrutinized are never aware that the FAP has made an identity and flight plan check (largely true for the small commercial airlines), a small number of non-trafficking intercepts reach the radio communication interrogative stage.
The co-pilot of the interceptor aircraft A-37 reported to the HCR that he had called off the attack because flames were coming from the intercepted aircraft.

 Rocket Interceptors and the SR53
Fir interceptor fighters, the choice was either to loiter at high altitudes, which, given their limited endurance, was not usually a feasible option, or to reach these heights as quickly as possible.
Current day interceptor projects are expected to be adequate in performance to match the enemy threat in normal circumstances, but may be unable to destroy enemy aircraft carrying out special operations at exceptional heights.
Because it is not intended to land the aircraft under rocket power, and because all available rocket fuel is likely to be consumed in climb and flight at altitude, a small auxiliary turbine engine is to be provided which will enable the aircraft to return to base and land under its own power.

They said that, if a sound plan could be devised for the production of additional military aircraft in Europe they, for their part, would be prepared to place offshore procurement contracts in Europe on condition that European Government, for their part, would find sufficient additional finance to make the programme worthwhile.
The Belgian and Netherlands Governments for their part have decided to purchase the equivalent of $117 millions' worth of Hawker "Hunter" interceptor aircraft, to be built in those two countries under a co-operative agreement.
It must be emphasised that the funds subscribed for this programme for the manufacture of certain types of military aircraft are only a proportion of the money being spent by European members of NATO on aircraft production.

The aircraft's existence wasn't officially acknowledged by the Johnson administration until 1964, when it was unveiled to counter election year charges by Republicans that the Administration was not doing enough in the field of continental air defenses.
In response to the heavy air-crew casualties suffered during the Vietnam conflict, a variety of small experimental aircraft were tested in the 1960s and 1970s to determine the feasibility of "stealthy" aircraft- vehicles incorporating design and materials technologies to reduce radar cross-section and obscure the signature of the aircraft.

The 'Six' is generally regarded by those who flew her and took care of her myriad complexities as one of the most aesthetically beautiful aircraft designs ever to come off a drafting board; the Six was also a great plane to fly, as was its predecessor, the Deuce (F-102 Delta Dagger).
Almost 2/3rds (approximately 199 aircraft) of all the Sixes produced were converted to QF106 aerial target drones under the 'Pacer Six' Program, with most being expended by the 82 ATRS at Tyndall AFB (Florida).
There were also a few non-flying airframes left on the Tyndall ramp at the end of the 'Pacer Six' Program (7 aircraft), as well, and originally they were parked in that part of the Tyndall AFB ramp known as the 'Swamp' (although in unflyable condition).
