  TurboTrain
The train is in regular, scheduled intercity passenger service and is the only new non-electrified intercity passenger train to reach operational status in the United States in the Past 15 years.
The suspension system causes the train to bank inward around curves under the influence of centrifugal force, as opposed to the outward motion experienced by conventional trains.
The speed at which the train can be operated depends upon the condition of the track, the number of grade crossings and the type and condition of the signal system.

 APT-P The InterCity Development Train
The success of the diesel powered high speed train, InterCity 125, in attracting passengers has proved this on routes where it is possible to cruise at high speeds for many miles.
The train in which you are now travelling is made up from these prototype vehicles, built for development and ultimately to carry passengers, In practice certain features of the prototypes have not proved to be as sufficiently reliable as we had hoped, neither would the costs of modifications be economic compared with a new design.
The latest InterCity strategy confirms that the benefits of reduced journey times are still justified commercially, but recent analysis shows that speeds as high as 155 mph are no longer commercially viable on either the West or East Coast Main Lines.

CRS Report: RL30659 - Amtrak: Overview and Options - NLE
In polls, Americans have indicated their desire to have intercity passenger trains supported by the federal government: a 1997 poll by the Gallup Organization found that 69 percent of Americans favored this (even among those who said they would not be affected by an Amtrak shutdown, 62 percent favored continued government support for it).
Trains were superseded as a passenger choice in part because of their comparatively slow speeds; their competitive advantage in other countries has largely come through the implementation of high speed train systems.
Freight railroads are generally content to operate their trains at speeds of 59 mph or less; this imposes less wear and tear on their tracks, and since freight trains do not have to make frequent stops-as passenger trains do-their average speed will be close to that maximum speed.

InterCity - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In Germany, the InterCity network was launched in 1971 to accompany and eventually replace the Trans Europ Express trains.
In 1985, with many of the TEE trains gone and the introduction of the InterRegio, the network was expanded again, now covering virtually any major city of then-West Germany.
According to the railway operators, InterCity trains consume only a third of the energy requirement of passenger airplanes and just a sixth of that demanded by single-occupancy private cars, and are consequently promoted as both energy-efficient and environmentally friendly transport modes.

Transylvania triangle train tour - Wikitravel
Therefore, train travel is both cheap and easy to use (you don't need to know any road directions or numbers, or any bus company contacts), and, for many people, it is a 'destination' within itself.
Travel on trains is comfortable but not all that luxurious, so it's useful to pack snacks, etc. It's good to have water and food with you always, not so much in the larger cities (Cluj-Napoca, Oradea, Brasov and Timisoara) but for the rural areas.
When using A or P trains, it's best to book 1st class, with the others, second class is more than comfortable, especially on the InterCity (IC).

Maglev train - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The magnetic field in the train is produced by either superconducting electromagnets (as in JR-Maglev) or by an array of permanent magnets (as in Inductrack).
The propulsion coils that exert a force on the train are effectively a linear motor: An alternating current flowing through the coils generates a continuously varying magnetic field that moves forward along the track.
Strong magnetic fields onboard the train make the train inaccessible to passengers with pacemakers or magnetic data storage media such as hard drives and credit cards; vehicle must be wheeled for travel at low speeds; system per mile cost still considered prohibitive; the system is not yet out of prototype phase.

Slow Travel Italy - Trains, reading the basic train ticket
These tickets are sold for regular trains that don't allow reservations (Regionale, Diretto, Interregionale) and for trains that allow reservation but don't require it (Espresso, Intercity).
This kind of ticket gives the owner the right to travel on the train, but it does not grant you a seat: you bought the train passage and that's all.
On most trains you can find vacant seats that you can use, but occasionally you will be forced to travel standing in the corridor of the train if there are no vacant seats.
