  Web Interface Design
Interface design encompasses three distinct, but related constructs--usability, visualization, and functionality (Vertelney, Arent, & Lieberman, 1990).
Recently, a fourth component of interface design has emerged as a critical factor--accessibility.
Interface design is most often associated with the development of Web pages, computer software, and multimedia, but is relevant to the creation of any instructional media or technical equipment.

Do Metaphors Make Web Browsers Easier to Use?
There appears to be some controversy amongst researchers and user interface designers as to whether it is better to use an integral metaphor or a composite metaphor.
In this case, the interface element was drawn from the travel metaphor (figure 5), and therefore the correct response would be ‘TourBook’, the same as in the integral travel condition.
Half the interface elements in the composite metaphor condition were identical to the interface elements in the integral library metaphor condition and the other half were identical to the elements in the integral travel metaphor condition.

Yet we seem to enjoy the experience of using attractively designed interfaces, as well those that are simply easy to use.
Interface design is both a decorative art and a practical application of usability principles.
Good interface design both enables functionality and gently constrains a user's expectations of the same.

A Summary of User Interface Design Principles
Sensables prefer user interfaces that utilize their perceptual abilities -- in other words, they like interfaces where the features are "up front" and "in their face".
Design realistic tasks for the users, and then recruit end-users that have the same experience level as users of your product (Avoid recruiting users who are familiar with your product however).
Much of the fluency with computer interfaces derives from play -- and those who have dedicated themselves to "serious" tasks such as running a business, curing disease, or helping victims of tragedy may lack the time or patience to be able to devote effort to it.

 INTERFACE DESIGN: Accessibility
When designers began to use large images, proprietary media formats, and complex page layouts to produce well-designed documents, the Web became a better-looking place, but those users who require clean HTML for access were shut out from many pages.
A page designed using red text against a green background, for example, presents a problem for users with red-green color blindness: the contrast between text and background may not be great enough for the text to be distinguishable.
Always check your page designs on typically sized display screens (800 x 600 pixels) to be sure that all major navigation and content areas fit well within the horizontal area of the screen.

LLT Journal: Design and Evaluation of the User Interface...   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-08)
Using a definition of the user interface as the communication channel between the user and the functional elements of the computer (Furnes and Barfield, 1995; Marchionini, 1991; Waterworth, 1992), human-computer interaction can be seen as a system with three components: a computer/application, an interface, and a human user subsystems (see Figure 1).
The design process of a user interface involves the development of a conceptual model of the application and its functionality by the designer, which is then implemented as the user interface, often using one or many metaphors.
Interface design is the process of selecting interface elements and features based on their ability to deliver support for the cognitive processes involved in the instructional activities facilitated by the application.

Design is not just an expression of ideas in physical form, but a concrete embodiment of assumptions, values, desires, ideals, dreams, expectations, and prejudices.
Design is an expression of what (and who) we believe are “normal” of how much we value certain costs over others — financial, social, and political.
If universal design is intended to be usable by all people without the need for adaptation or specialized design, a more participatory and inclusive design process seems to be one useful way of achieving this.
